Alexander Zverev was over the moon as he finally made it to the final of the French Open courtesy of a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2, win over last year's runner-up, Casper Ruud. This was the German's fourth consecutive semifinal, having failed in his previous three attempts.
During his on-court interview, Zverev admitted that he wasn't able to articulate his happiness. He also made a mention of his history on Philippe-Chatrier Court, where he had some of his best as well as worst memories. The German has won many matches on the court but also faced a horrific ankle injury during his semifinal match against Rafael Nadal in 2022. He said that he was very happy to be in the final and was ready to give it his all.
"Yeah, can't describe the feelings. Obviously, extremely happy, especially, you know I got so much history on this court. Some of the best memories, some of the worst memories happened on this court, and I am so happy to be in the final finally on my fourth semifinal and yeah, I'm going to give it my all on Sunday," he said.
"I knew I had to be much more aggressive" - Alexander Zverev on his approach against Ruud
Alexander Zverev mentioned that he needed to be confident in his game and abilities if he had to defeat a player of Casper Ruud's caliber. He touched upon his lack of aggression during his defeat to the Norwegian in last year's semifinal and also in the first set today, mentioning how he needed to fix that. He said that he was happy with the intent he showed and also expressed his excitement to be in the final.
"I had to be. I had to today, if I waited, you saw how quickly the first set went away. Casper is too good of a player to be waiting and to not try to play your game. I did that last year, I lost very easily and I did that in the first set, lost also the first set very easily so I knew I had to be much more aggressive," he said.
"I knew that I had to take it on to him and I did, I'm happy the balls went in today and I'm happy to be in the final," he added.
Alexander Zverev will face Carlos Alcaraz in the summit clash, which will be held tomorrow, on the same court.
