Simona Halep being charged with a second doping violation by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has left tennis fans astounded.
Halep has been provisionally suspended from the tour since October 2022, having tested positive for Roxadustat following her first-round exit from the US Open. In April, the 31-year-old broke her silence on the matter and denied any intentional use of the banned substance. She also expressed frustration with the delay in her hearing.
On Friday, May 19, the ITIA charged the Romanian with a second doping offense which "is separate and in addition to" her charges from last year. The agency announced that the basis for the charge stemmed from irregularities in her athlete's biological passport, as determined by an independent expert panel.
Several fans suggested that the second charge signaled the end of Simona Halep's career as a professional athlete.
"That's pretty much her career and reputation tarnished for good," a fan wrote
"My god she is over. Career and legacy in one," another fan chimed in.
"That's her finished for good now. Sure more are to come," a user tweeted.
The timing of the second charge also raised eyebrows among fans, with one fan questioning the reason for its arrival after an eight-month long delay.
"8 months later and now a 2nd charge. What is going on!!!," a user tweeted.
"The timing is just suspicious. She went public talking about her situation and after not even 1 month BOOM there is another charge. Whom are they protecting so they are willing to sacrifice her career," another fan commented.

Simona Halep faces "leagues more serious" charges than Maria Sharapova, says tennis journalist
While sharing the news of Simona Halep being charged with a new doping violation, tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg added his thoughts on the matter.
Rothenberg stated that the Romanian's charges were the most severe faced by any World No. 1. He deemed them to be "leagues more serious" than the charges levelled at Maria Sharapova.
"Simona Halep still will get her chance to appeal and profess her innocence, and we will find out more about this second charge, but it’s worth putting in context that these are the most severe doping charges any #1 tennis player has faced. Leagues more serious than Sharapova," Rothenberg tweeted.
Maria Sharapova served a 15-month long ban after testing postitive for the banned substance meldonium during the 2016 Australian Open.
