Caroline Wozniacki has dismissed her father Piotr's claim that she would retire again in 2025. Piotr made the remark after his daughter was denied wildcards at the French Open and Italian Open this year.
Wozniacki retired in 2020 but made an unexpected comeback on the WTA Tour three years later at the Canadian Open. She then played in several tournaments, including the US Open and the 2024 Australian Open, all courtesy of wildcards since she returned unranked.
However, the Dane did not receive wildcards for the French Open and Italian Open, which did not sit well with her father and coach, Piotr. In May, he told Sport.pl that his daughter might retire again in 2025 if she continued to face such treatment.
"I will tell you that Caroline [Wozniacki] will definitely not play next year. We have already decided this. Because there's no point in going through something like that. They don't take us seriously, so it's a waste of our efforts," Piotr said.
"We will survive until the end of this season, until the last Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, and then we will leave it at that. We'll see what happens with Wimbledon along the way," he added.
Caroline Wozniacki, though, has rebutted her father's claims in a recent conversation with the PA news agency, asserting that she never had such a discussion with him.
"I think sometimes my dad gets a little ahead of himself. It’s definitely not something we’ve talked about," the former Australian Open champion said.
Caroline Wozniacki on prospects of receiving Wimbledon 2024 wildcard: "I’m hoping for the best"
Caroline Wozniacki has requested a wildcard from Wimbledon to participate in this year's edition, where her best achievement to date has been reaching the fourth round on six occasions.
During her conversation with the PA news agency, the 33-year-old fondly recalled winning the London Major as a junior in 2005 and mentioned that she was keeping her fingers crossed.
"We’ll see what happens," Wozniacki said. "I’m hoping for the best. I have so many special memories. I won junior Wimbledon back in 2005, so it’s a long time ago. There’s something so special about playing on Wimbledon’s Centre Court that you can’t replicate anywhere else."
Wozniacki's grasscourt season has gotten off to a rough start as she exited the ongoing Birmingham Classic in the first round, losing 4-6, 1-6 to Elise Mertens on June 18.
