The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) honored Jannik Sinner's ascension to World No. 1 by roping in some of his rivals to talk about his popularity. Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Christopher Eubanks all spoke highly of the Italian, praising not only his game but also his personality. However, a section of tennis fans felt that the ATP went overboard in promoting Sinner.
From the second half of the 2023 season, Sinner's form has, for the most part, been sensational. As a result, it wasn't much of a surprise when he carried on his rich vein of form from last year at this year's Australian Open, where he won his maiden Grand Slam title. Since then, Sinner has added to his collection of titles by winning the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam and then the Miami Open.
At the French Open, the Italian reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner's Roland Garros run, combined with Novak Djokovic's withdrawal from the claycourt Major, saw him become the new World No. 1; the first time an Italian men's tennis player accomplished the feat.
In a bid to honor Sinner's achievement, ATP got some of his fiercest rivals, including Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Rublev, to talk about the Italian.
Fans though, did not take kindly to the ATP's move. One set of fans protested against it, saying that nothing of the sort was done for Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz. Medvedev became the World No. 1 in February 2022, while Alcaraz reached the summit of the ATP Tour rankings in September the same year.
"This PR is crazy LOL, when Carlos got the n.1 there werent even 1/3 of these videos dedicated to that achievement," one fan wrote.
"Andrea Gaudenzi (Italian, chairman of ATP) is why all of this .....it's getting excessive now.... They didn't do anything like this for Daniil or even Carlos," another fan commented.
"Don’t remember you doing this for Carlos and Daniil. But yeah let’s ask other players how “popular” Jannik is," another fan chimed in.
Another set of fans ridiculed the ATP, opining that it is going a bit too far with promoting Sinner.
"Sick of ATP acting like Sinner being no.1 is the eighth wonder of the world. I have never ever seen them celebrating someone’s ranking like this before ? You’d think he won all grand slams in a year with the way they overdoing with the PR," wrote one fan.
"This is starting to get creepy. Tennis TV and the ATP are one tweet away from showing us a photo of Jannik Sinner p**ping to explain to us that he is the No. 1 who p**ps the best of all the No. 1s who have p**ped in the history of tennis," commented another fan.
"This is so cringe! Come on establishment even neutrals can see your desperation here," another fan weighed in.

Sinner lifted the ATP World No. 1 trophy at a ceremony in Monte Carlo on Monday, June 10. Later, he told beIN SPORTS that becoming the top-ranked men's tennis player in the world was one of his dreams growing up. However, he also opined that he still needs to work on some aspects of his game.
"I'm just looking forward to the next challenges. I'm very happy to share this with all my team and the people who are close to me. On the other hand I'm very sure that I can still improve some things and I'm looking forward to it. I was happy and then it's kind of a relief. This is a dream that I've dreamed of when I was a little kid. It was only a dream that day and now that I can say that I'm World No.1, it means a lot to me," Sinner said.
Right now, the Italian is competing at the Halle Open, where he has reached the Round of 16 after overcoming stiff resistance from Tallon Griekspoor in the Round of 32. Next up for Sinner is a clash against Hungarian Fabian Marozsan.
