Olga Danilovic recently made waves by pulling off a stunning upset over seventh seed Jessica Pegula at the 2025 Australian Open. However, the narrative surrounding her father and boyfriend, who are fellow athletes, has sparked criticism from tennis fans.
Aiming to reach the fourth round of a Major for just the second time in her career, Danilovic produced a stellar showing against Pegula to claim a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory after a one-hour and 30-minute battle. The 23-year-old was cheered on by compatriot Novak Djokovic from behind the scenes as she made the impressive breakthrough.
Following her victory, tennis journalist Jose Morgado highlighted her personal relationships, noting that while Olga Danilovic is the daughter of a "basketball legend" and the girlfriend of a "football superstar," the triumphant moment belonged only to her.
"Daughter of a basketball legend. Girlfriend of a football superstar. But today it's ALL ABOUT HER! Idemo, Olga," Morgado posted on X.
Danilovic's father, Pregrad "Sasha" Danilovic, is the president of the Basketball Association of Serbia, with a storied legacy as a player. Pregrad, who is celebrated as one of European basketball's greatest shooting guards, is a two-time EuroLeague champion and was voted the Euroleague Final Four MVP in 1992. He also competed in the NBA, representing the Miami Heat from 1995 to 1997.
Meanwhile, Olga Danilovic's boyfriend, Jan Oblak, is a Slovenian soccer star who plays as the goalkeeper for Atletico Madrid and captains the Slovenia national side. The 32-year-old superstar won the 2020-21 La Liga title with his club and was nominated for the coveted Ballon d'Or award in 2017 and 2018.
However, tennis fans were frustrated by Olga Danilovic's outstanding accomplishment being framed in connection to the men in her life.
"Stop making the accomplishments of women about men challenge (impossible)," one fan commented.
"Any chance you could celebrate her success without mentioning the men in her life. You make it sound like she slept her way to the win," another fan chimed in.
"We didn't need to know what her dad or bf do. They have nothing to do with her tennis," a fan argued.
"I know you didn't mean anything bad, BUT, as a journalist please take care of what you write - why are women's successes always perceived through men? She was out for a while, this success is big enough without any comparison. Bravo, Olga!" said another.
Several fans also pointed out the irony of Jose Morgado's post, since it prominently referenced her father and boyfriend while claiming to be about the Serb's win.
"It's all about her but you're the one that mentioned those people Jose," one fan posted.
"I didn’t thought about her father or boyfriend ONCE during the whole match, I don’t think anyone besides you thought about them lol," a fan remarked.
"If it’s all about her then why did you mention her relations to others…..," another fan wrote.
"Well clearly not. Because you had to introduce the men in her life before you even mentioned her name," said another.
Olga Danilovic to take on Paula Badosa in Australian Open 4R
Following her stunning upset over Jessica Pegula, Olga Danilovic will aim to deliver a similar performance against 11th seed Paula Badosa in the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open. Badosa claimed a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Marta Kostyuk to book her place in the Round of 16.
Danilovic will enter the highly anticipated contest with a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head record, including a 6-4, 7-5 win in their most recent encounter at the 2019 Guadalajara Open.
If Olga Danilovic triumphs over Paula Badosa, she will face the winner of the match between third seed Coco Gauff and Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals of the Melbourne Slam, followed by a potential semifinal clash with top seed and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
