Taylor Fritz lauded Coco Gauff's new "shovel" celebration that she did at the United Cup. The 20-year-old played a key role in Team USA's victory in the tournament and she was subsequently named its MVP.
The Americans faced Poland in the United Cup final and the first match was between Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek. The WTA Finals champion put in a fine performance to beat the World No. 2 6-4, 6-4 and put Team USA ahead.
The match came to an end after the Pole double-faulted, and Gauff celebrated by mimicking digging by using her racket as a shovel. She used the same celebration earlier during the tournament as well.
During the post-final press conference, Taylor Fritz was asked how much he appreciated Coco Gauff's celebration. The 27-year-old said that he loved the celebration and that it was something he and Tommy Paul were doing during their bronze medal run at the Olympics.
"No, I love it, honestly. That's all Tommy and I were saying during the Olympics. That was our celebration at the Olympics when we were winning those doubles matches," Fritz said.
"But yeah, I really appreciate, like, the competitor that Coco is. She's played so well all week and fought so hard in all the matches. I can really have a lot of respect for that," he added.
Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff teamed up for two mixed doubles matches during the United States' group-stage matches against Canada and Croatia, winning both of them.
Coco Gauff on the origins of her "shovel" celebration
During the aforementioned post-match press conference, Gauff was asked about the origins of her "shovel" celebration. She responded by saying that Denis Kudla was the source.
"It came from Denis. Honestly, I think it started, like, in my match against China. I was playing Shuai, and she was playing really great tennis. You know, he was, like, great digging, keep digging. Then the shovel celebration came from him. I just kind of took it and ran with it. That was the theme of the week for me," Gauff said.
The 20-year-old has had a blistering start to the 2025 season, as she won all of her matches at the United Cup. Before beating Iga Swiatek, she got the better of Leylah Fernandez, Donna Vekic, Zhang Shuai and Karolina Muchova.
After helping Team USA to victory at the United Cup, Gauff is next scheduled to compete at the Australian Open.
