Taylor Fritz reveals abuse messages, match-fixing accusations directed at him after United Cup loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime

Taylor Fritz began his 2025 season with a loss against Felix Auger-Aliassime at the United Cup. After the loss, the American was bombarded with a barrage of hurtful and offensive messages from people on social media.

Fritz is representing the United States at the 2025 United Cup and kicked off his campaign against Canada's Auger-Aliassime on December 29. Coco Gauff had given Americans a 1-0 lead after beating Leylah Fernandez in the women's singles match earlier in the day. Fritz looked on his way to winning the tie after taking the one-set advantage over Auger-Aliassime.

However, the Canadian leveled the score in the second set. Auger-Aliassime then completed a stunning comeback in the third set to win the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and keep his nation competitive in the tie. After the tough loss, the World No. 4 took to social media platform X to reveal messages he received from people who had apparently lost money betting on him to win the match.

In the messages, Fritz was called a "scum" and "p***y," with some accusing him of match-fixing and a few even wishing death upon him. The 27-year-old highlighted the prevalence of these attacks from bettors on tennis players and posted on X:

"New season of tennis has officially started. We’re so back."

Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff teamed up to play the winner-take-all mixed doubles match against Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime. In a close tussle, the Americans managed to edge past the Canadians 7-6 (2), 7-5 and win the tie 2-1.

While the USA has one foot in the door for the knockout phase of the 2025 United Cup, the team needs to win its last group stage clash against Croatia on December 31 to ensure qualification. Canada defeated Croatia in the first group stage match 2-1. Borna Coric defeated Auger-Aliassime, but Donna Vekic lost to Fernandez. The Canadian duo won the mixed doubles match to win the tie.

Taylor Fritz will be up against Coric in the men's singles match before Gauff takes on Vekic. The nominations for the mixed doubles match are not known yet. If the USA wins the tie, the team will qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2025 United Cup. However, there is still a chance that either Canada or Croatia make it through.

In 2024, the USA suffered a shock group-stage exit despite possessing Fritz and Jessica Pegula in the team. The Americans won the United Cup in 2023 after beating Italy 4-0 in the final.
