Taylor Fritz, a tennis royalty, was born to former tennis players Kathy May Fritz and Guy Fritz. He is into his first Grand Slam final at the 2024 US Open. He made history as he became the first American man to reach the final at the New York slam since Andy Roddick did it in 2006.

Even though Fritz's parents are former tennis players, neither of them coached him after he turned pro. However, his father, Guy coached him to the 2015 US Open junior title.

His mother Kathy was a former World No. 10 and won seven titles on the WTA Tour. She reached the quarterfinals thrice, twice at the French Open and once at the US Open. She, too, has a rich family history, being a great-granddaughter of David May.

David May founded the May Department Stores Company in 1877, which merged with Federated Department Stores in 2005, and was later renamed Macy's Inc. in 2007. Macy's is a popular American departmental store, having a market value of $4 billion, according to Stock Analysis.

Recently, Kathy lavished praise on her son for handling the pressure at the US Open better than she did. She told the Athletic:

“Taylor handled those situations way better than I did. I felt completely overwhelmed.”

Fritz's father Guy is also a former tennis player and was awarded the Development Coach of the Year by the USTA for coaching the American to the US Open junior title in 2015. Guy's brother, Taylor Fritz's uncle, Harry Fritz was also a tennis pro.

Talking about how his father and uncle helped him with tennis shots, he told New York magazine in 2016:

"I personally take credit for my forehand. My uncle helped me a lot with my backhand. My dad taught me to serve," Fritz said.

Taylor Fritz talked about how his parents, Kathy and Guy, helped him during the early stages of his tennis career. Talking to Tennis.com, the 2022 Indian Wells champion said his mother helped him make many important decisions early on in his career but later took a step back.

"My mom kind of took a step back, but she’s gone to tournaments with me and it’s worked out great. She helped me make a lot of important decisions, especially early on because she’d been through it herself. She kind of leaves me to do my own thing," Taylor Fritz said.

Talking about his father, Frtiz said he was involved during the juniors. But as he turned pro, he moved on to professional coaches as parent-coach dynamics can get complicated.

"My dad was much more involved, with me all the way through juniors, and then at a point I just thought it was time to move on and find someone who . . . it’s just tough when it’s a parent-coach relationship," Fritz said.

Fritz will face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final of the 2024 US Open.
