Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz have gelled well at the United Cup, taking the US team through to the semifinals. They both won their singles rubber against China to secure a last-four spot.

First up, Gauff needed to battle hard for her 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Zhang Shuai, who was hitting the ball big on Wednesday. The Chinese led by a break on multiple occasions in the opening set, but her opponent was able to escape an upset in the end.

The onus then was on Fritz to deliver the win and that is exactly what he did against Zhang Zhizhen, dropping only four points behind his serve in the 6-4, 6-4 victory. That’s not to say that there wasn’t any pressure on the American.

Speaking after the win, Fritz lauded Gauff for putting the US ahead in the tie before joking he was under a lot of pressure to seal the victory as he did not want to be the one to follow Gauff’s win with a defeat in the second singles.

"[Coco Gauff] did such a good job putting us ahead and giving me the chance to come out and put us through," Taylor Fritz said via WTA.
"There was a little bit of pressure because I didn't want to be the one who loses it for the team after Coco won all her matches this week. I played a really solid match. Really happy with it," he added.

Notably, Fritz had surrendered a 1-0 lead in the United States' opening tie against Canada. With Gauff having beaten Leylah Fernandez, Fritz had the chance to seal the tie but faltered against Felix Auger-Aliassime. He and Gauff, however, returned in the mixed doubles and took the match and the overall tie 2-1.

Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz have now led the US team to three straight wins at the United Cup. After beating Canada 2-1 in the round-robin contest, they recorded a clean-sweep against Croatia.

The duo had stepped up on that occasion as well, with Gauff beating Donna Vekic 6-4, 6-2 and Fritz taking out Borna Coric 6-3, 6-2. They won the mixed doubles encounter in straight sets as well.

In the semifinals, the US will face either the Jasmine Paolini-led Italy or the Karolina Muchova-led Czech Republic. The two sides play their quarterfinal on Friday.
