Taylor Townsend bagged the women's doubles title at the 2025 Australian Open with Katerina Siniakova, a day after Madison Keys won the women's singles event. Townsend celebrated 'women of color' as they made waves in the tennis world.
On Sunday, January 26, the top seed pair of Townsend and Siniakova took on the third seed Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko in the final of the women's doubles at the 2025 Australian Open. The American-Czech pair won the first set convincingly and were on their way before Ostapenko and Hsieh rallied to force a decider.
The top seeds finished off the third set without much difficulty to win their second Grand Slam title together by registering a 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 win. Siniakova, a doubles specialist has now won 10 women's doubles Major titles. Townsend, meanwhile, earned her second after her triumph at Wimbledon last year.
During their champions' press conference, Townsend was asked about her friend Madison Keys' triumph a day before. She had defeated Aryna Sabalenka to earn her maiden Grand Slam title. Drawing parallels to her own achievements, Townsend emphasized the importance of representation and the inspiring message it sends to future generations, stating:
"I look at Madison and all the things she's been through when she played Sloane [Stephens] in 2017, you know, it was two women of color in the finals that weren’t Venus [Williams] and Serena [Williams]."
"Even her being a woman of color winning here and then me as well, I just think that it’s so inspiring to be able to have little girls and boys looking at us. This is history in the making and I think that it’s something so special. So I can’t even put into words how happy I am," Townsend added.
The pair have shared celebratory messages for each other after their titles in Melbourne.
