Taylor Townsend on her comeback after maternity leave and how being a mother requires ‘grit
Taylor Townsend welcomed her son Adyn in March 2021, and returned to tennis the following year. The American seemingly picked up exactly where she left off on court, reaching the women's doubles semifinals at the French Open and finishing second at the US Open upon her return.
Speaking on her experience with maternity and her journey back to the top, Townsend told the WTA:
“Where I am in my life right now it's given me purpose and a resurgence of understanding who I am. I was off for maternity leave for 19 months. It was very very unplanned and kind of a shock for me that I had to have a C-section. Going from being such an independent person to needing help to do the most basic things that was mentally like very difficult. So now, coming back, I've been able to maneuver things in such a different way and really stay true to who I am.”
Townsend also went on to emphasize the challenges that come with being a parent, outlining that mother's need ‘grit’ to manage their responsibilities.
“Understanding how to maneuver in this world as your child grows evolves and they become their own person, you have to manage that. Being a mother it's not pretty, it takes grit. You are constantly having to put someone else before you. I feel like grit is such a perfect word, mothers embody grit by just existing. It's a very difficult life but honestly it's not one that I would change," she added.
Since returning from maternity leave, Taylor Townsend has only gotten better on the court. In women's doubles, she has achieved a career high ranking of World No.5 and claimed her maiden Grand Slam title earlier this year at Wimbledon.
