Tennis fans criticized the use of Alexander Zverev's image

The decision of the French Open to feature Alexander Zverev's image as the cover for the announcement of a social media protection tool aimed at protecting players from online abuse drew sharp criticism from tennis fans.

On May 22, the French Open and the French Tennis Federation revealed their collaboration with Bodyguard, an AI technology aimed at filtering abusive comments directed at players on social media platforms. This innovative technology allows for real-time comment moderation, analyzing responses in less than 200 milliseconds.

Players and tennis officials will have the option to integrate their social media accounts with the technology developed by Bodyguard.ai. This connection will remain active for a week after the tournament ends.

“The mental health of the players is a priority for the Roland Garros tournament. We will not accept any form of violence at our tournament,” Caroline Flaissier, the director of the FFT said.

The use of Alexander Zverev's picture as the cover image for the announcement received flak from tennis fans.

They recalled Zverev's domestic abuse case in 2020 when his ex-girlfriend, Olga Sharypova, accused him of emotional and physical abuse. Although the ATP cleared Zverev of the allegations, fans pointed out the apparent irony in featuring him as the face of a tool designed to protect players from abuse.

"The irony of putting Zv*rev as the picture," one fan tweeted.
"Interesting choice of photo when you talk about harassment," another fan chimed in.

Meanwhile, other fans expressed appreciation for the initiative to implement protective measures for players.

"Definitely a step in the right direction," a fan tweeted.
"GOOD. The hate speech has gone too far. Why can't people just encourage their favorite instead of harassing the opponent?," another fan commented.

After being ousted from the recently concluded Italian Open in the fourth round by eventual champion Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev will be up against Christopher Eubanks in his tournament opener at the Geneva Open.

This will mark Zverev and Eubanks' first meeting on the ATP Tour. The American defeated Benoit Paire 7-6(2), 6-3 to book his spot against the German.

Alexander Zverev is set to be seeded at No. 22 at the upcoming French Open. The World No. 27 will be defending points from his semifinals finish last year, when he was forced to retire mid-match against Rafael Nadal after badly twisting his ankle while chasing down a forehand.
