Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev have bemused tennis fans on the internet with their performances during the 2024 US Open quarterfinals on Wednesday, 4 September. Sinner defeated Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 to qualify for the semifinals in New York for the first time.
Notably, the duo hit multiple highs and lows as the match swung both ways. The opening set began with Sinner producing powerful shotmaking to go 1-0 up on the back of seven winners and two break points.
The following set, however, witnessed a lackluster show from the Italian as Medvedev raced to a 5-0 lead in no time before drawing the proceedings. The two switched places in the third set and it was Sinner who created a 5-0 lead this time.
The fourth set, which proved to be the decider, finally saw a tussle between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev. The World No. 1 managed to edge the 2021 US Open champion out with a solitary break in the fourth.
Fans on Reddit expressed their bewilderment over the level of tennis the top seeds displayed during the quarterfinal match.
"I destroyed my sleep schedule for this weird a** match lol," a fan wrote.
"The weirdest match fr," a fan stated.
Here are a few more reactions from Reddit:
"Idk about y’all, I found the second and third set breadsticks hilarious lmao," a fan wrote.
"Two nights in a row for me from Europe, all regretted staying up. Not just sleep, but sacrificed work and relationships as well," a fan remarked.
"I believe that was the strangest match I have ever seen," a fan commented.
"This match was giving Wii tennis when there’s only one good controller," a fan wrote.
"Not the best match from my side, not the best from Jannik Sinner's also": Daniil Medvedev
In his post-match press conference at the 2024 US Open on Wednesday, Daniil Medvedev assessed his performance, suggesting he couldn't overcome every challenge Jannik Sinner threw his way.
"Definitely, the momentum swings, I would say if I look for the positive, the first set was horrible for me. I think almost even probably worse than the third one. I managed to solve a lot of problems in the second set. Same in the fourth set, like I managed to start solving some problems. The negative one is that finally I didn't solve them till then," Medvedev said.
The fifth seed continued:
"Yeah, so I don't know why exactly, but not the best match from my side, I actually think not the best from his [Jannik Sinner] also, a little bit missing here and there. But he won, so yeah, he was better."
As Medvedev bows out of the contention in Flushing Meadows, Sinner finds himself pitted against Britain's Jack Draper in the semifinals.
