Fans were stunned as Jelena Ostapenko squandered four match points against Canadian wildcard Marina Stakusic in the second round of the Guadalajara Open. The topsy-turvy match ultimately went in favor of the teenager, earning her first Top 20 victory

Stakusic was in cruise control of the match taking the first set comfortably. In the second set, the Canadian teenager led 5-3 but could not reach match point before Ostapenko rallied to make her way back into the contest.

The Latvian won eight games in a row to win the second set and she 4-0 in the decider. The World No. 155 reduced the deficit to 4-3 before Ostapenko held her first match point at 5-3. Stakusic saved it and three more at 6-5, forcing a tiebreaker, which she won to record a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(0) victory over the top seed.

Fans took to X to express their shock and disappointment with Ostapenko's performance in the WTA 500 event.

"What a miserable choke from Penko... I mean losing from 2 breaks up against Stakusic after having few match points then collapsing like a cheap tent in tiebreak to get tiebagelled," one fan wrote.

"There are levels to this Penko choke we're not all equipped to handle," another fan wrote.

"The biggest win of my career" - Marina Stakusic on defeating Jelena Ostapenko at the Guadalajara Open

Marina Stakusic's encounter against World No. 12 Jelena Ostapenko was only her second match against a Top-20 player. She lost to Barbora Krejcikova in last year's Billie Jean King Cup Finals but managed to clinch the biggest win of her career this time around.

"I'm feeling amazing... A little bit overwhelmed. It's kind of just hard to believe, a little bit, just because I had some opportunities in the second [set] to close it out," Stakusic said.

"But in general I'm super happy to get through that match. It was a tough one, but the biggest win of my career, so it's amazing," she added.

World No.155 Stakusic will next take on fifth seed Magdalena Frech in the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara Open, with the winner facing either fourth seed Caroline Garcia or sixth seed Marie Bouzkova in the semifinals.
