Holger Rune has denied reports suggesting he is on the verge of leaving Nike ahead of the US Open. The 2024 edition of the US Open is set to begin on Monday, August 19, and run through Sunday, September 8.
Nike has sponsored Rune for apparel and footwear since his professional tennis debut in 2020. On Friday, Rune addressed a post on X (formerly Twitter) that claimed insiders had reported he was ending his relationship with the renowned brand and was seeking a new sponsor for his US Open campaign.
"Been speaking with a few insiders and looks like Holger Rune is done with Nike. Look for a new sponsor to debut at the US Open potentially," the post read.
A few hours later, Rune responded humorously, stating that the insiders clearly weren’t doing their job well and that he remains happy with Nike.
"Don’t know who these insiders are but they are not very good at their job I can tell you that. I am very happy with my Nike collaboration" Rune stated.
Rune is part of a star-studded roster of ATP players partnered with the company, including Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Rafael Nadal, Nick Kyrgios, Sebastian Korda, and many others.
Should Rune compete in the 2024 US Open, it will mark his fourth appearance at the tournament. The 21-year-old is still seeking his first Grand Slam title, with his best result coming at the 2022 US Open, where he reached the third round before falling to Cameron Norrie.
Holger Rune will kick off his Cincinnati Masters campaign by facing Matteo Berrettini
Holger Rune will face Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters on Sunday, August 11. The Dane is coming off a third-round loss to Alexander Zverev at the Canadian Open.
Rune is still in search of a title this season, with his last win coming at the 2023 BMW Open. He started the season strongly, reaching the final of the Brisbane International, where he was defeated by Grigor Dimitrov. Rune also had semifinal finishes at the Open Sud de France, Mexican Open, and BMW Open.
This season's Cincinnati Masters is Rune's third appearance in the tournament since turning pro. The 21-year-old will be aiming to surpass his best result, a second-round finish from last year.
Berrettini, Rune's opponent, has been in fine form this season, winning the Grand Prix Hassan II, the Swiss Open, and the Austrian Open Kitzbühel. The Italian also reached the final of the Stuttgart Open in June.
