Andre Agassi reminisced about his time in Melbourne during the 2024 Australian Open. He also remembered the time spent with Carlos Alcaraz before the event kicked off.
Agassi, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, enjoyed the most success at the Melbourne Major winning four out of his eight Grand Slams at the event. He lifted the trophy in 1995, 2000, 2001, and 2003. He also reached the semifinals twice in 1996 and 2004 and boasts an incredible 48-5 win/loss record at the Major.
The American legend arrived in Melbourne ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year for the trophy presentation. On his arrival, he met up with Carlos Alcaraz, a then-two-time Grand Slam champion. The two seemed to have a fun chat with Agassi seemingly talking to him about racket swing technique.
As an eventful 2024 season nears its end, Andre Agassi took to Instagram to share a photo of him alongside Carlos Alcaraz. The two seem to share a nice conversation in front of the Australian Open winners' board, where the American's name makes a frequent appearance. He mentioned how he was still thinking of his time at the Melbourne Major.
"Thinking of you, @australianopen 🇦🇺," he captioned his post.
Despite Carlos Alcaraz's valiant efforts, he could not get his name on that winners' board, with the Australian Open becoming the only Major the Spaniard is yet to conquer. It was Jannik Sinner winning the first Major of his career in Melbourne after taking down Daniil Medvedev in a scintillating comeback from two sets down.
Alcaraz fell to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals in four sets. However, the Spaniard would later get his revenge against the German in the French Open final.
"Carlos Alcaraz's just so easy to like" - Andre Agassi admits to being a fan of the Spaniard
During his appearance on the AO Show podcast earlier this year, Andre Agassi confessed that he was a fan of Carlos Alcaraz even before he met him at the Australian Open. He said the Spaniard was easy to like and could grab the audience/s attention with his smile.
"He’s [Carlos Alcaraz] just so easy to like even from a distance and then meeting him, his spirit is so warm. I mean his smile is like, it lights you up so just watching him sort of capture the imagination of the public, I’m guilty as charged, I’m a fan," Agassi said (at 1:25) on 'The AO Show' podcast.
He later sang Alcaraz's praises and mentioned that not only he but also his wife Steffi Graf was a fan of the 21-year-old.
Andre Agassi and Carlos Alcaraz also teamed up for an exhibition match at the US Open to take on John McEnroe and Novak Djokovic. The American and Spanish lost 8-10
However, the two may be on different sides next year as Agassi takes charge of Team World at the Laver Cup.
