Andy Roddick recently reacted to a hilarious meme featuring his long-time rival and friend, Roger Federer. The meme drew parallels between Federer’s gracious acknowledgment of the US Open crowd and a venture capitalist’s self-congratulatory demeanor after a minor achievement.

Federer made a notable appearance at the 2024 US Open on Tuesday, September 3, marking his first visit to the New York Major since retiring from professional tennis in September 2022. The five-time champion attended the evening session on day 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center.

The session featured a women’s singles quarterfinal between last year’s runner-up Aryna Sabalenka and Zheng Qinwen, as well as the men’s singles quarterfinal between Grigor Dimitrov and Frances Tiafoe. Upon his arrival at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Swiss received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from the crowd, which he acknowledged with a gracious wave and a smile.

The meme that caught Roddick’s attention humorously compared the 43-year-old’s gracious acknowledgment to a venture capitalist’s exaggerated self-congratulation after making a single introduction.

"VC [Venture Capitalist] after making one intro," a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Roddick couldn’t help but share his amusement on social media and wrote:

"This broke me hahahaha."

Andy Roddick expressed his admiration for Roger Federer, highlighting the Swiss’ seemingly effortless style of play.

In a recent episode of his 'Served with Andy Roddick' podcast, Roddick admitted to feeling envious of the Swiss' relaxed approach to tennis.

"I was very jealous and still jealous of Roger because he was the guy I played most in the biggest matches. Just because we were good on the same surfaces at the same time was his ease of operation, it just drove me crazy. Because I could see him on the Saturday before Grand Slam losing to some chucker on our practice court and I walked by and he was smiling, laughing,” Roddick said (at 1:11:38).

The two met 24 times in official ATP matches, with the Swiss winning 21 of those encounters. Roddick’s three victories came in the 2003 Montreal Masters, the 2008 and 2012 at the Miami Open.

Andy Roddick lost four Grand Slam finals to Roger Federer: Wimbledon in 2004, 2005, and 2009, and the US Open in 2006. Their 2009 Wimbledon final, which the Swiss won 16-14 in the fifth set, is considered one of the greatest matches in tennis history.
