The 2024 French Open proceedings have taken a huge hit as rain disrupted play on all the outside courts on Wednesday, May 29. A total of 23 singles matches need to be rescheduled. Only matches scheduled on the two courts with retractable roofs were able to continue.
After less than two hours of action on Court Simonne-Mathieu and the other outside courts, rain interrupted the play.
The French tennis federation announced that all the matches on those courts had been canceled after five hours of delay had already taken place. Moreover, the organizers also informed that considering the ticket holders received less than two hours of action, they were eligible for a refund.
Only matches at the Philippe-Chatrier and Suzanne-Lenglen courts continued as per schedule. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Garcia, and Iga Swiatek among a few others, played and won their matches on the day.
An X account posted the update from the French Open organizers and fans expressed their displeasure regarding the issues at the tournament.
"This is a disaster i can't see them finishing tomorrow's matches either. Doubles isn't even started. No idea how they get through this," one user wrote.
Another fan asked, "This s*it happens every RG year, can they just not find a better time of the year or what exactly????"
One fan joked, "BREAKING NEWS: French open to be rebranded as French Closed with immediate effect."
A sizable amount of fans asked for a roof to be installed at all courts so such delays do not take place.
"Just install some roofs ffs," one fan wrote.
"Once again, ALL Slams should be required to have roofs on ALL courts. Mother Nature does not care about match schedules," another wrote.
"Honestly it's tiring. Time to start building roofs on the smaller courts too. It's ridiculous, it's a grand slam, not a random tournament in the middle of nowhere," a third fan wrote.
"Truly remarkable how a major slam event like the French Open still hasn’t invested in retractable roofs as a contingency plan tor bad weather," a fourth fan wrote.
Although the weather forecast for Thursday does not look promising, the matches canceled on Wednesday (May 29) will be rescheduled for Thursday (May 30).
