Jannik Sinner revealed the health issues he faced prior to entering his quarterfinal match against Daniil Medvedev at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The Italian struggled with his health during the match and took a medical timeout during the third set.
Entering the tournament as the top seed, Sinner was considered a favorite for the title. He had a great run to the quarterfinals defeating Yannick Hanfmann, 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, Miomir Kecmanovic, and Ben Shelton en route.
The World No. 1 faced fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the last 8 clash. The Russian prevailed in the topsy-turvy match 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinal for a second consecutive year.
Sinner felt unwell and took a medical timeout during the third set. However, he came back to complete the match. Sinner was asked about his health concerns during the post-match press conference.
The 22-year-old addressed the issues and mentioned that he hadn't felt great since the morning but gave Medvedev credit for playing well. He also said that it was his physio who asked him to go off the court during his timeout. He admitted that he had a hard time competing in the match.
“This morning I already didn’t feel great. I had some problems and then with the fatigue. It was tough. Nothing to take away from Daniil. I think he played very smart, good tennis. That’s it. I went off the court. I actually didn’t want to go off. The physio told me it was better to take some time because he watched me and I didn’t seem in shape to play. I was struggling physically. It wasn’t an easy moment. I tried to fight with what I had today. That’s it," Sinner said.
"In the fifth I had one poor service game which decided the match" - Jannik Sinner expresses disappointment over quarterfinal loss
Continuing his thoughts, Jannik Sinner said that he didn't vomit but went off the court to remove the dizziness he felt. He admitted he tried his best to reach the semifinals and was disappointed when he failed to convert his set points in the third. The Italian was glad about his level in the fourth set and mentioned that one poor service game in the decider swung the match in Medvedev's favor.
“Yeah, I wasn’t feeling great. I didn’t vomit. But I took some time because I was quite dizzy. Off court I had the toughest time maybe. When I went back I tried my best. Obviously disappointed about the third set. I had a couple set points and couldn’t use them. Fourth set I raised my level a bit. In the fifth I had one poor service game which decided the match,” he added in the same press conference.
Jannik Sinner will begin preparing for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics where he will compete in singles and doubles.
