Frances Tiafoe bore the brunt of tennis fans' anger after he seemingly made fun of Stefanos Tsitsipas alongside Ben Shelton during the final match of Day 2 at the 2024 Laver Cup in Berlin. Shelton paired up with Alejandro Tabilo to take on Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud.
Team World ended the second day on a strong note, with the team of Shelton and Tabilo winning the doubles match against Tsitsipas and Ruud 6-1, 6-2. This win put Team World in an 8-4 lead heading into the third day.
However, during the match, it seemed as if Shelton and Tiafoe shared a chuckle after the young American hit a shot in the Greek's direction.
Fans didn't take too kindly to Frances Tiafoe's jibes and took to X (formerly Twitter) to lash out at him. One of the fans said that though they do not support Tsitsipas, the behavior of Taifoe was "vile."
"Not a fan of Tsitsipas at all but this is really vile from Tiafoe. I don’t think Tiafoe is a nice guy at all," the fan commented.
Another fan questioned why Tiafoe needed to drag other players into his arguments.
"wtf is Tiafoe’s problem? And trying to recruit other guys into your petty beef is so needy and pathetic," the fan questioned.
Here are some other reactions from the fans.
"This is just lame. I actually hate team world. After what Tiafoe said about Tsitsipas…like no," a fan said.
"Same guys, Shelton and Tiafoe, who were chucking like high school kids after hitting Tsitsipas yesterday now suddenly care about Medvedev's racquet potentially harming someone? I get that the former is within the rules, but the racquet didn't hit anyone so relax," a fan opined, alluding to the Russian throwing his racket towards the crowd.
"I’m sick of hearing commies saying how we would all want Tiafoe on our team. No we wouldn’t. He’s the cheerleader for the bullies," a fan was furious.
"He always targets Stef (only seen him do this kinda stuff again w Andrey but never in the same level). Maybe he's jealous of them because they have successful careers & huge fandoms behind them," a fan mentioned.
Back in 2022, Frances Tiafoe defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas from a set down in a highly competitive battle to win Team World its first Laver Cup.
Frances Tiafoe will take on Alexander Zverev on day three of the 2024 Laver Cup
Earlier on day three, Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton lost to Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud 2-6, (6)6-7, reducing Team Europe's deficit to one point. However, Shelton then defeated Daniil Medvedev (6)6-7, 7-5, 10-7 to put Team World ahead 11-7.
Tiafoe is taking on Alexander Zverev in the third match of the final day, which could end up being the final match of the seventh edition of the Laver Cup. If Tiafoe wins, Team World would clinch the Laver Cup for the third time.
Interestingly, The two men share the record for the most appearances at the Laver Cup with five each. The German has won every Laver Cup he has been a part of so far.
If Zverev wins, Carlos Alcaraz, and Taylor Fritz would play a Laver Cup decider.
