Roger Federer-backed Swiss company On has an apparel deal with World No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Recently, the brand released her kit for the 2024 US Open kit but has now come under fire for it. Fans believe On's kits for Swiatek follow rehashed designs with just a change in colors.
On was founded in 2010 by three friends, including former Swiss Ironman champion Olivier Bernhard. As the Swiss company grew, it attracted one of the biggest sportspersons from the country - Roger Federer. The tennis icon became a shareholder in 2019.
Swiatek was the first female tennis player to be sponsored by On. However, fans believe the company has the potential to do better with the kits they've made for the Pole. The outfit she is set to wear at the 2024 US Open was posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Fans were disappointed with the latest kit's similarity with the previous ones.
"We just need to accept it. Nothing will change," one fan wrote.
"Omg the colors are sooo nice and such a good combo, too bad its that very same thing but just different colors," said another.
"Nothing phases me anymore. If she likes it I’m happy," a third fan wrote.
Here are some more fan reactions to Iga Swiatek's 2024 US Open kit.
"I feel like the colors will look so nice on the uso courts but omfg im so tired of the cut of the kits… ugly a** skirt pleat esp," one fan wrote.
"Another OMBRE kit of the same style for the US Open. “Tired” is not even enough to express how I feel at this point," another fan wrote.
"Will Iga play in the same kit but in different color until the end of her career?" asked one fan.
Notably, On recently signed Hollywood actress Zendaya as one of their ambassadors. The Swiss company, however, was on the receiving end of some slack from fans for not featuring their athlete Swiatek in a promo with Zendaya, and going with Federer instead.
Iga Swiatek treating Cincinnati Open 2024 as a 'practice tournament' for US Open 2024
Iga Swiatek is playing at the 2024 Cincinnati Open right now. She recently won bronze at the Paris Olympics on the Roland Garros clay courts. After a sensational season on clay, she is in the process of transitioning to hard courts.
Swiatek believes her first tournament on the hard court will not be easy and sees Cincinnati as a 'practice tournament' for the upcoming US Open. In a pre-tournament press conference, she said:
“I know that the first tournament on hardcourts isn’t going to be easy... So I’m going to try to treat it as a practice tournament, but not in a way that I don’t care - more in a way that I want to implement all the stuff that I practiced on... I think it’s the best approach for me now."
In the second round of the tournament, top seed Swiatek won against Varvara Gracheva in three sets. She will next face 15th-seed Marta Kostyuk.
