Tommy Paul's campaign at the 2025 Australian Open ended in a heartbreaking loss to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Paul's girlfriend, Paige Lorenze, has shared an endearing message for the American to lift his spirits after his devastating exit.
Aiming to reach his second Major semifinal, Paul engaged in a closely contested battle with Zverev at the Melbourne Slam. The American served for both the first two sets and even held set points on those occasions, but he squandered those opportunities as the World No. 2 proved clinical in the decisive moments to take the lead in the match.
Although Paul dominated the third set to narrow the deficit, he was unable to maintain his momentum, with Alexander Zverev eventually claiming a hard-fought 7-6(1), 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-1 victory to advance to the semifinals.
Tommy Paul's girlfriend, Paige Lorenze, who was cheering him on throughout his campaign at the Australian Open, proudly praised him for his "amazing" tournament despite his crushing exit.
"So proud of you for an amazing tournament @tommypaull ❤️," Lorenze posted on her Instagram story.
Though the loss will undoubtedly sting, Tommy Paul can take solace in the fact that his run at the Melbourne Slam has ensured that he will break into the top 10 of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career following the conclusion of the Major.
"Tommy Paul played better than me, I was not playing great and I thought he was" - Alexander Zverev after Australian Open QF win
Despite his loss, Tommy Paul received a glowing acknowledgment from Alexander Zverev after their quarterfinal clash at the 2025 Australian Open. Speaking in his on-court interview, the World No. 2 admitted that Paul had outplayed him and likely deserved to hold a 2-0 lead in the match.
Zverev also expressed his delight about reaching the semifinals in Melbourne, as he continues his quest to win his maiden Grand Slam title.
"To be honest, I should have been down two sets to love. He played better than me. I was not playing great and I thought he was. I somehow won the first set, somehow won the second set, and I'm up two sets to love all of a sudden and I need only one more set," Zverev said.
"The fourth set was definitely the best that I've played and I'm obviously extremely happy to be back in the semi-finals now," he added.
Following his win over Tommy Paul, Alexander Zverev will face Novak Djokovic in a blockbuster semifinal clash at the Australian Open. Djokovic claimed a thrilling 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win over Carlos Alcaraz to set up the highly anticipated encounter.
