Iga Swiatek faced a disappointing loss to Madison Keys in the semifinals of the 2025 Australian Open, missing out on the opportunity to compete against double-defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final. The defeat prompted tennis fans to share several hilarious memes.

Swiatek was seeded second at the Melbourne Major and she kicked off her campaign with a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory over Katerina Siniakova in the first round. She continued her winning streak by defeating Rebecca Sramkova 6-0, 6-2 in the second round, Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-0 in the third round, and lucky loser Eva Lys 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth round.

In the quarterfinals, the former World No.1 overpowered eighth seed Emma Navarro 6-1, 6-2 to secure a spot in the semifinals against 19th seed Madison Keys.

In the final four, Keys managed to edge out Swiatek with a 5-7, 6-1, 7-6[8] victory to secure her place in the final, her second time advancing to a Grand Slam final after the 2017 US Open.

Madison Keys entered the 2025 Australian Open after a quarterfinal run at the ASB Classic, where she fell to eventual champion Clara Tauson. She then competed at the Adelaide International where she defeated Jessica Pegula to claim the title.

Keys began her Melbourne Major campaign by defeating compatriot Ann Li 6-5, 7-5 in the first round. She continued her winning streak by overcoming qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse 7-6(1), 2-6, 7-5 in the second round and 10th seed Danielle Collins 6-4, 6-4 in the third round.

The former World No.7 secured a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over sixth seed Elena Rybakina in the fourth round and then defeated 28th seed Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and most recently emerged victorious against Iga Swiatek in the semifinals to advance to the final.


Aryna Sabalenka leads Madison Keys in head-to-head record ahead of Australian Open final

Madison Keys will go head-to-head with top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the 2025 Australian Open. The two players have faced each other five times of the WTA Tour, with Sabalenka emerging victorious in four out of their five encounters. Their most recent clash took place in the fourth round of the 2024 China Open, where the World No.1 secured a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Keys and Sabalenka have crossed paths twice before on the Grand Slam stage. The first meeting was in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, which saw the Belarusian triumph with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

They met again in the semifinals of the 2023 US Open, where Sabalenka staged a remarkable comeback to win 0-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(5) before finishing as the runner-up in the tournament.
