Nick Kyrgios' singles run at the 2025 Australian Open was disappointingly short as he lost in the first round. Following this defeat, the Aussie seemingly bitter, hinted at retirement, which led to the creation of several hilarious memes by tennis fans.

Kyrgios had been absent from the court for the past two years due to knee, foot, and wrist injuries. His return in 2025 began at the Brisbane International, where he was defeated in the first round by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

The 29-year-old also competed in the doubles event with Novak Djokovic, winning their first-round match against Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies but then to the top-seeded pair of Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus in the next round.

Nick Kyrgios then began his singles campaign at the Australian Open, where he used a protected ranking to secure a spot in the main draw. He faced Jacob Fearnley in the first round and lost in straight sets 6-7(2), 3-6, 6-7(3). During the post-match press conference, the former World No.13 hinted at singles retirement, citing that playing was hurting him physically.

"Realistically I can't really see myself probably playing singles again here. It was special . Like taking that in, it was pretty good. It was nuts. I didn't want to just throw in the towel and walk off or retire. I was hurting physically. I respect my opponent . The fans waited hours to come see me play. Realistically I can't see myself playing a singles match here again," Kyrgios said.

In response to Nick Kyrgios' retirement hints, fans took to social media to share humorous memes. One fan posted a GIF of a woman popping a champagne bottle in celebration.

Another fan suggested a moment of silence for the Aussie, hilariously accompanied by a GIF of a bell ringing loudly.

“A moment of silence for Kyrgios in tough times,” a fan posted.

Here are some other memes made by the fans after Nick Kyrgios dropped a retirement hint following his first-round loss at the 2025 Australian Open:

““Let’s have a moment of silence for kyrgios” me:” a fan shared.

Despite his singles campaign ending prematurely, Nick Kyrgios is still in the running to secure his second Australian Open doubles title. He has teamed up with fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis for the doubles event, and the duo is set to take on another Australian pair, James Duckworth and Aleksander Vukic, in the opening round.

In 2022, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis clinched the doubles title at the Melbourne Major. They secured a wildcard entry into the main draw and began their campaign by defeating the wildcard duo of Alex Bolt and James McCabe in the first round.

The duo then beat the top-seeded pair of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, as well as Ariel Behar and Gonzalo Escobar in the second and third rounds, respectively.

In the quarterfinals, Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis ousted Tim Putz and Michael Venus before securing a win over Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the semifinals to earn a spot in the final.

In the championship match, the Australian pair emerged triumphant against Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, ultimately claiming the 2022 Australian Open men's doubles title.
