Carlos Alcaraz played a marathon five-set encounter against Frances Tiafoe at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, but still had some energy left in the tank to cheer for the Spanish football team. The national side was taking on Germany in Euro quarterfinals.
Speaking to the media at his delayed press-conference, Alcaraz confessed that he quickly made his way to the ice bath after his third-round encounter that he won 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 after much toil.
The youngster joked that he was trying his best not to get his phone wet as he watched the Euro encounter unfold as he simply could not have missed it.
Notably, the Spaniash team was able to book their spot in the semifinal after beating Germany 2-1 in the keenly-contested affair.
"When I left, I signed autographs, did some cycling and when I got there I was about to finish the first part... after that I had to take cold baths, to contrast the cold and heat, and there I was, with my mobile phone, cheering on Spain in any way we could," Carlos Alcaraz said.
"I was there trying not to get my phone wet , but I couldn't miss Spain, I couldn't miss Spain," he added.
Alcaraz, however, clarified that he did not request to be put on Centre Court in the afternoon session but was still happy to have seen his name in the time-slot. That way, he could actually catch some of the soccer action live later in the day despite having had to play five lengthy sets.
"I didn't ask to play before, because Wimbledon is Wimbledon, but I was very happy when I saw that they put me in that turn," the Spaniard said.
"Hadn't planned to do it" - Carlos Alcaraz on using Jude Bellingham's celebration at Wimbledon
Carlos Alcaraz also mimicked English footballer Jude Bellingham’s famous celebration after his victory over Frances Tiafoe at Wimbledon, much to the liking of a backed English crowd at Centre Court.
The Spaniard said during the press conference that he had not planned it, but thought that a great victory like that deserved a great celebration.
"The truth is that I hadn't planned to do it before the match if I won. Far from it. But at the moment it just came to me, in the end we are here in London. And a great victory deserves a great celebration," Carlos Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz will next take on the winner of the encounter between Brandon Nakashima and Ugo Humbert. The duo’s match was suspended with the Frenchman leading two sets to one and 6-6 in the fourth.
