Coco Gauff reminded the tennis universe about Tyler, the Creator mentioning her in the lyrics of his hit song Thought I Was Dead after winning the 2024 WTA Finals on Saturday (November 9). The 20-year-old also expressed gratitude to god for her success while speaking about the endless hours she has put into training over the last few years.
Gauff proved her detractors wrong at this week's year-end championships as she beat several top WTA players en route to the second-biggest title victory of her career. The American came from a set down and a break down in the deciding set to beat seventh-ranked Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) in the championship match.
Coco Gauff subsequently took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle a few hours later to remind her fans about famous rapper Tyler, the Creator's lyrics from his eighth album Chromakopia's Thought I Was Dead, where he heaped effusive praise on her strength.
The alternative hip-hop artist drew a comparison with the World No. 3 to illustrate how far he had come over the years.
"B***h, you ain't Coco Gauff, you can't serve me," the rapper wrote in his lyrics.
Gauff evidently recalled the lyrics as she expressed happiness at the high note on which her 2024 had ended.
"Tyler tried to tell ya’ll 🤷🗣️ In all seriousness, I’m so grateful for all the support the last few weeks," Coco Gauff wrote on X. "Getting to win the last tournament of the season and it also being my second biggest title of my career so far is insane. Wow WTA FINALS CHAMPION 🤯"
She was also grateful for the 'life that she gets to live' through her successful tennis career.
"All glory to God truthfully 🙏 I'm eternally grateful for the life I get to live and to have moments like this makes all of the hours/sacrifice I put into this worth it. time to rest for a little bit but then it’s back to grind for the year’s szn 😈⌛"
Coco Gauff: "Waking up to my name being mentioned in a Tyler, the Creator song... absolutely insane"
Last month, Coco Gauff became aware of Tyler, the Creator namedropping her in his hit track Thought I Was Dead. The 20-year-old was pleasantly surprised as she posted the song's music video on her social media handles.
"waking up to my name being mentioned in a tyler song… absolutely insane 🤯. thank you @tylerthecreator #Chromakopia"
Gauff happens to be a huge fan of the two-time Grammy winner and even attended the rapper's set at the 2023 Camp Flaw Gnaw Carnival held in Los Angeles.
