The United Cup marks the start of the 2025 season. Plenty of top players have opted to compete here for the third year in a row to begin their preparation for the Australian Open.
The last two editions of the tournament saw the likes of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic participate as well. However, the former retired a few weeks ago, and the latter will compete in Brisbane this time.
Nevertheless, there are plenty of big names involved to make this event a huge success for another year. With that in mind, here's a brief guide regarding this year's United Cup:
United Cup 2025 Dates and Venue
This year's edition will be held from December 27, 2024 to January 5, 2025. Two cities will host the tournament. The group stage and the quarterfinals will be split between the RAC Arena in Perth and the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney. The latter venue will host the semifinals and the final.
United Cup 2025 Format
All 18 teams have been evenly divided into six groups of three. The winners of all six groups, along with the best performing runner-up from each of the two cities will advance to the knockout stage.
Each tie will consist of a men's and women's singles match, and a mixed doubles match. The singles matches will feature the top-ranked players from the respective countries. Singles matches are played in best of three tie-break sets, while the mixed doubles match is played in a best of two tie-break sets, with a deciding match tie-break in case the match is tied at one set all.
United Cup 2025 Teams and Players
Group A is made up of the USA, led by Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz, and Danielle Collins, along with Canada and Croatia. Felix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Fernandez are Canada's top players, while Donna Vekic and Borna Coric are Croatia's best prospects.
Group B includes Poland, Norway and Czechia. Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz led Poland to the final last year, and will aim to go all the way this time. Karolina Muchova and Tomas Machac lead the Czech charge, while Norway's hopes rest on Casper Ruud.
Group C consists of Spain, Kazakhstan and Greece. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari have helped Greece qualify for the knockout stages twice so far, and will look to continue that streak. Elena Rybakina is the top-ranked player in the Kazakh team, while the Spaniards are led by veteran Pablo Carreno Busta.
Italy, France and Switzerland are in Group D. Jasmine Paolini will aim to back up her breakout 2024 season by leading the Italians to victory here. Belinda Bencic will handle the reins for the Swiss contingent, while Ugo Humbert leads the French team.
Group E includes China, Germany and Brazil. Alexander Zverev will lead Germany's title defense. The Chinese hopes suffered a huge blow after Zheng Qinwen had to pull out. Zhang Zhizhen will steer the team in her absence. Beatriz Haddad Maia will take the lead role in Brazil's campaign.
Group F comprises Great Britain, Australia and Argentina. The Brits are without their top-ranked male player following Jack Draper's withdrawal. Katie Boulter will now look to guide them to the business end of the tournament. Meanwhile, her fiance Alex de Minaur will be Australia's star campaigner, while Tomas Martin Etcheverry will lead team Argentina.
