Novak Djokovic, Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka were part of the stellar line up of top players competing on Day 1 at the 2024 US Open. The day took many exciting turns with defending champions Gauff and Djokovic sailing through to the second round.
Holger Rune was stunned by home-hope Brandon Nakashima while Maria Sakkari retired mid-match in her encounter against Wang Yafan due to a shoulder injury.
Apart from the game, players' on-court fashion was also a highlight at the tournament. Let's take a look at some of best and the worst players' outfits at the 2024 US Open.
# Coco Gauff's form-fitting dress
Coco Gauff stepped on court in style donning a form-fitting pleated blue dress with cutouts at the midriff and lower back. She paired it with the second edition of Coco CG2 shoes by her sponsor New Balance.
Gauff matched the dress' yellow highlights with a bright flourescent yellow head band and had also painted her nails blue. One of the eye-catchers was the World No. 3's necklace featuring the Olympic rings. The necklace was notably a gift by Desirae Krawczyk to the entire US tennis contingent at the Games.
“Usually I try to wear a necklace during the whole tournament. Last year, I think I wore a locket-type necklace,” Gauff said as per Tennis.com. “I was like, I just came off the Olympics and was a flag bearer. So I might as well flex that"
Gauff defeated Varvara Gracheva 6-2, 6-0 in 66 minutes. She will next compete against Tatjana Maria in the second round of the US Open.
# Frances Tiafoe's lilac color choice
Frances Tiafoe is known to make some bold fashion choices including his last year's cyan patterned sleeveless outfit. This year the American entered the court donning a lilac colored outfit with deep purple highlights by his sponsor Nike. He paired it with white sneakers and contrasting black socks.
Tiafoe defeated compatriot Aleksander Kovacevic 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. In an on-court interview after his win, Tiafoe was asked how he felt about his kit for this year.
"I mean, I don't know man, you guys like it? Again, eveything you wear, you've got to feel confident and that makes the outfit that much better. Hopefully it grows on you all and you get to see it for two weeks, so we'll see," Tiafoe said [at 1:57].
Tiafoe will next face Alexander Shevchenko in the second round of the hardcourt Major.
# Emma Navarro's classic flair
Emma Navarro opened her US Open campaign at a career high ranking of World No. 12 and as one of the five American women singles player in the Top 14. She brought a classic flair on-court donning an outfit by her sponsor Fila.
The outfit had pinstripe highlight on the collar of a sleeveless top. The shorts were covered by a see-through pleated skirt with a striped waistband. She accessorized her balck-and-white outfit with a red watch and a colorful bracelet
Navarro enjoyed a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anna Blinkova and will next face Arantxa Rus for a spot in the third round.
# Novak Djokovic's golden touch
24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic recently added the coveted Olympic gold medal to his list of achievements at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He walked on court at the US Open carrying specially designed golden colored kit and bags by Head.
Apart from the bags, Djokovic's outfit remained similar to his last year's polo t-shirt and shorts in shades of blue. He defeated Radu Albot 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 and will next face Laslo Djere in the second round.
# Ben Shelton's colorful emsemble
Last year's semifinalist Ben Shelton clashed with Dominic Theim, who was playing his last tournament on tour, in the opening round of the US Open. The American wore pink and blue t-shirt and shorts for the on-court encounter. The colors meshed together on the pieces that had a plain white side.
He paired the outfit with white socks and black shoes adding contrasting, perhaps clashing colors to the emsemble.
Shelton defeated Theim, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Theim was later interviewed on-court and given a tribute as he brought his two-decade long career to a close.
Shelton will next face Roberto Baustista Agut for a place in the third round of the 2024 US Open.
# Aryna Sabalenka's Plain Jane look
Last year's runner-up and World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka kickstarted her 2024 US Open campaign with a confidence boosting 6-3, 6-3 victory over Priscilla Hon.
For her on-court look, the Belarusian opted for a black Nike dress with a high neckline. The only contrast on an otherwise plain dress was a pink Nike swoosh in front. She also wore white and hot pink Nike sneakers that did little to elevate the look.
Sabalenka will next clash with Lucia Bronzetti in the second round of the final Grand Slam of the year.
# Elina Svitolina's long sleeved dress in NY heat
Elina Svitolina defeated Maria Laurdes Carle 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the 2024 US Open. The Ukrainian stepped on-court in an elaborate Adidas outfit with cutouts in front of the arms and pleats on either side of the dress.
However, it was her choice of wearing long sleeves in the New York heat that made it an unusual fashion choice.
Svitolina will next clash with Anhelina Kalinina in the second round at the 2024 US Open.
