With the 2024 US Open kicking off on Monday, August 26, Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek have already arrived in New York ahead of the year's final Grand Slam. Despite both players having previously lifted the title, the two WTA stars have not faced each other at the US Open since turning pro.
Gauff will begin her title defense by facing 24-year-old Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva in the first round, while Świątek’s first-round opponent will be a qualifier. In the second round, the American could face Germany’s Tatjana Maria or a qualifier, while Świątek could meet either a qualifier or Australia's Daria Saville.
Świątek might encounter Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the third round, while Gauff could face 27th seed Elina Svitolina or Anhelina Kalinina. The fourth round could see Gauff facing her compatriot Emma Navarro or Marta Kostyuk, while Świątek may go up against either Mirra Andreeva or Liudmila Samsonova.
In the quarterfinal, Gauff could face Barbora Krejčíková, who won the Wimbledon Championships just over a month ago, or one of Victoria Azarenka, Paula Badosa, or Maria Sakkari. Świątek, on the other hand, might face a challenge from either Danielle Collins, Jessica Pegula, or Emma Raducanu.
One of Elena Rybakina, Jelena Ostapenko, Naomi Osaka, Karolína Muchová, or Jasmine Paolini could have the opportunity to knock out the World No. 1 in the semifinal. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff could face either the 2023 runner-up Aryna Sabalenka, Qinwen Zheng, Donna Vekić, or Daria Kasatkina.
The final could set the stage for Gauff and Świątek to meet for the 12th time in their careers. Of their previous 11 meetings, Gauff has won only once.
A brief look at Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek's journeys to winning the US Open
Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff have both won the US Open once. The pole clinched the title in 2022 while Gauff lifted the title the following year.
Swiatek kicked off her campaign by outclassing Jasmine Paolini in the first round before defeating Sloane Stephens in the second. Swiatek then got the better of Lauren Davis and Jule Niemeier in the third and fourth rounds.
The quarterfinal saw Swiatek beat Jessica Pegula, and the Pole beat Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal to set up a final clash with Tunisia's Ons Jabeur before clinching the title.
For Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open was her maiden Grand Slam title. She won against Laura Siegemund in the first round and Mirra Andreeva in the second. The American then knocked out Elise Mertens and Caroline Wozniacki in the third and fourth rounds respectively.
In the last eight, Gauff defeated Jelena Ostapenko and in the semifinal, she beat Karolína Muchová to set up a final with Belarusian star Aryna Sabalenka. Notably, Coco Gauff won the title clash straight sets.
