The US Open final will be shifting from ESPN to ABC this year. The fourth Grand Slam of the year will start on August 26, 2024.
ESPN announced on Monday that its sister network ABC will host the coverage for the US Open men's final, scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 8. This will be the first time that ABC will air the men's final from Flushing Meadows. A live 60-minute pre-show will also be aired before the final.
The US Open previously aired on CBS in the United States before ESPN bought the U.S. media rights for the tournament in 2015. Tim Bunnell, Senior Vice President, Programming and Acquisitions at ESPN, said in an official press release:
"The US Open is one of the signature events on the sports calendar, and we are pleased to bring its culminating match, the Men's Finals, to tennis fans via ABC."
The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. The hard court tournament is held annually in Queens, New York.
In 2006, the US Tennis Association (USTA) renamed the Major venue to "USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center" to pay homage to the tennis legend Billie Jean King, who won the tournament four times in her career.
ESPN is not moving the US Open women's final coverage to ABC
ESPN will not shift the broadcasting of the women's final as well to ABC. ABC is reportedly contractually obligated to cover college football on the same day. Moreover, the men's final was moved to ABC to compete for viewership with the NFL.
The viewership stats of the US Open finals indicate a trend favoring the women's contest. The women's final viewership trumped the men's final for the majority of the last five editions.
Last year, Coco Gauff's impressive performance in the finals was watched by 3.4 million viewers, while Novak Djokovic's triumph only garnered a mere 2.3 million views. Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the title contest and the Serb defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 to clinch the US Open last year.
American tennis legends Chris Evert and Serena Williams hold the record for winning the most number of women's singles titles (6) at the US Open in the Open Era. Swiss legend Roger Federer shares the record for the most number of men's singles U.S. Open titles in the Open Era with Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors (5).
