Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden saw their 2024 US Open campaign end on Sunday, September 1, after losing in the men’s doubles pre-quarterfinals. They were defeated by the Argentine duo of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni 1-6, 5-7.
The match got off to a rough start for Bopanna and Ebden, who struggled to find their footing in the opening set. Gonzalez and Molteni quickly took control, breaking their opponents' serve twice to secure a dominant 6-1 victory in the first set. The Argentine pair's aggressive play and sharp net skills left the Indo-Aussie pair with few opportunities to make a comeback.
The second set, however, was a different story. Rohan Bopanna and Ebden managed to stabilize their game, holding their serves and staying competitive throughout. The set was closely contested, with both pairs exchanging powerful serves and groundstrokes. The score reached 5-5 and it seemed like the set could go either way.
But Gonzalez and Molteni earned a crucial break in the 11th game, thanks to a well-placed backhand volley that caught Bopanna and Ebden off guard. With the momentum on their side, the Argentine pair held their nerve and served out the set in the next game, winning 7-5 and closing out the match.
Despite a stronger performance in the second set, Rohan Bopanna and Ebden couldn’t overcome the early deficit. Their loss marked the end of their journey in this year's US Open men's doubles. Meanwhile, Gonzalez and Molteni advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face the 10th-seed German pair of Tim Putz and Kevin Krawietz.
Not the end for Rohan Bopanna at US Open 2024
Rohan Bopanna's journey at the US Open 2024 isn't over yet. He and Indonesia's Aldila Sutjiadi pulled off a remarkable comeback to reach the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles event.
After a challenging start against John Peers and Katerina Siniakova, where they lost the first set 0-6, Bopanna and Sutjiadi rallied back with determination. They leveled the match by winning a tense tiebreaker in the second set, 7-6(5), and carried that momentum into the deciding match tiebreak. Despite the pressure, they remained composed, ultimately securing a 10-7 victory to advance.
In the quarterfinals, Bopanna will face his men's doubles partner Matthew Ebden, who is teaming up with Barbora Krejcikova. Ebden and Krejcikova earned their spot by defeating Iva Jovic and Kyle Bigun 6-2, 6-3.
