Sumit Nagal is all set to begin his US Open 2024 campaign with a first-round encounter against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. The two players will compete in the men's singles match at Flushing Meadows in New York on August 27.

While Sumit will enter the match as World No. 72, Tallon is currently ranked 40th in the world. He claimed his spot in the US Open main draw in July. Though the Indian is ranked lower than his opponent, he will still enter the match as a strong contender, given his exceptional performances on the ATP tour.

In June, Sumit Nagal won the ATP Challenger title at the Heilbronn Neckarcup, the sixth of his career so far. It was his second title of 2024, having also won the Chennai Open this year.

On the other hand, Griekspoor is coming off a round of 64 loss at the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati. However, the 26-year-old has shown enough pedigree over his career and promises to give Sumit a tough challenge. Last year, he won his maiden ATP Tour singles title at the 2023 Maharashtra Open in Pune.

Both players had a difficult outing at the Paris Olympics 2024. While Sumit made a first-round exit in the men's singles competition, Tallon was knocked out in the second round.

Sumit Nagal and Tallon Griekspoor have only met once in the past. The two went against each other at the 2019 ATP Tour Banja Luka, Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Dutch came out triumphant in the encounter, defeating Sumit, 6-2, 6-3 in two straight sets.

Tallon will surely enter the match with a mental advantage, having had the better of his opponent in the past. Even though his win against Nagal, came over five years back, it will still inspire Greikspoor to defeat the Indian once again.

For Nagal, his recent form will help him put his loss to the Dutch player, well into the past. The 27-year-old will take plenty of motivation, from his win against World No. 27, Alexander Bublik of Kazakhastan, earlier this year. Nagal had beaten Bublik in straight sets at Melbourne Park.

Given the immense talent the two players bring to the fore, the encounter between them promises to be a competitive one. They match up quite equally on paper and it will be interesting to see that who comes out better on the all-important day.
