Some tennis fans have expressed their disapproval of the attention given to Nick Kyrgios' comments on the Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek doping cases. Swiatek tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine in August 2024, while Sinner tested positive for clostebol in March of this year.
Kyrgios has been highly critical of the authorities' handling of the doping cases. During a press conference ahead of the Brisbane International, he described the situation as "disgusting" and a "horrible look for tennis." He said,
"Okay, he's No. 1 in the world, he is an amazing tennis player. I never said he's not. I just think the treatment has to be fair for everyone. Two world No. 1s both getting done for doping is disgusting for our sport. It's a horrible look. Yeah, the tennis integrity right now, and everyone knows it, but no one wants to speak about it, it's awful. It's actually awful. And it's not okay."
After Kyrgios' remarks were shared by several news outlets, some fans took to social media to criticize the former World No.13's comments being publicized. One fan opined that the media tends to use Nick Kyrgios' name as "clickbait." The fan also wrote about Kyrgios previously being accused of domestic violence.
“Media is a pile of sh*t - using him for clickbait without even mentioning his own domestic abuse. What's more disgusting - a failed test or beating a woman? For goodness sake."
While one fan thought that Nick Kyrgios talking about "integrity" was "very rich," another fan said the Aussie was "using this story."
“The abuser talking abt integrity... Very rich," a fan wrote.
“Kyrgios is just using this story to sell himself for interviews. He is an attention-seeker 😂 ," a fan posted.
A fan also suggested the possibility of players such as Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek taking legal action against Nick Kyrgios.
“[Nick] Kyrgios could easily be prosecuted for defamation: none of the tennis players he cited have been prosecuted for taking performance-enhancing drugs," a fan wrote.
Here are some more fan reactions:
“It's just jealousy from someone who's never been in the top ten. But I don't feel sorry for him, he doesn't deserve it," a fan posted.
“It would be worth clarifying that not even WADA is accusing Sinner of doping for performance enhancement. But this is clearly not important to Kyrgios or his adepts," a fan wrote.
“Neither Iga nor Sinner were punished for doping. But apparently his brain is too small to sit down and read the report. Do something about this man because he spreads disinformation 👎🏻 ," a fan posted.
Jannik Sinner refused to react to Nick Kyrgios' criticism of him after doping scandal: “I don't want to respond on what he said"
Earlier this year, during a press conference, Jannik Sinner made it clear he did not want to address Nick Kyrgios' comments regarding his doping scandal. Sinner also said everyone was entitled to their opinions.
He said,
“I don't want to respond on what he said. Everyone is free to say everything, so it's okay. I don't know . I don't know what to say . Maybe I say something now, and then the reaction is going to be something else because you live in this moment. I'm someone who forgets quite fast something. As I said, everyone is quite free to say everything, so it is what it is, yeah."
Looking ahead, Jannik Sinner will kick off his 2025 season at the Australian Open. He will be defending his title at the Melbourne Major, having won it in 2024 by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final.
