Alexander Zverev has replaced Carlos Alcaraz as the World No. 2 in the ATP Tour rankings. However, it seems to not have gone down well with some tennis fans, who shared their reactions.
This development has come on the back of Zverev's stellar run to the final of the 2024 Rolex Paris Masters, where Alcaraz crashed out in the third round to Ugo Humbert.
Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open and Wimbledon titles this year. His maiden Roland Garros title triumph saw him getting the better of Alexander Zverev in a thrilling five-set final. Meanwhile, the Spaniard was crowned Wimbledon champion for the second straight year, once again coming out on top against Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz also clinched the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells and the China Open.
Alexander Zverev though, has only won one ATP Tour-level title so far this year. That particular triumph came at the Italian Open. Despite these differences in achievements between the German and the Spaniard, the former has leapfrogged the latter on the ATP Tour rankings heading into the closing stages of the season. Zverev will be officially listed as the new World No. 2 after the conclusion of the Rolex Paris Masters.
Several fans on X (formerly Twitter) were left seemingly unhappy by the development. Some found it "ridiculous" that Carlos Alcaraz won two Majors and will still find himself behind Alexander Zverev in the ATP Tour rankings.
"This is utterly ridiculous! Alcaraz wins 2 slams and gets outranked by this clown," a fan wrote.
"Zverev being ranked above Alcaraz is the biggest joke ever. Like, what are we doing?" asked one fan.
"World No. 2 without a GS. This is where Tennis has come down to," another chimed in.
Other fans were left disappointed.
"We don’t care. We know who had the better year. Thanks," wrote one fan.
"We hate that for us," another fan commented.
"2024 is the year tennis died," suggested one.
Meanwhile, Zverev himself though has acknowledged that Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, the reigning World No. 1, are both superior to him as far as performances and results are concerned.
"Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are still the two best players in the world" - Alexander Zverev
Following his 2024 Rolex Paris Masters semifinal win over Holger Rune, Alexander Zverev said that according to him, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have been the two dominant performers in men's tennis this season. The German also said that for him, Alcaraz had the "second-best year" among ATP players.
Zverev said,
"It's nice, for sure. It's nice to be back at the highest position that I have been so far. Of course I want to get higher, but for me still Jannik has the best year this season, for sure, and then Carlos had the second-best year. He won two Grand Slams.
"I know that I'm ahead of him in the rankings maybe, but for me he won Wimbledon and Roland Garros. Those are two massive titles. So they are still the two best players in the world, in my opinion, at the moment."
Alexander Zverev will be up for a second title in 2024 when he faces Ugo Humbert in the final of the Rolex Paris Masters. Following the conclusion of the event, the German will start preparing for the year-end Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
