Jannik Sinner faced significant challenges during his fourth-round clash against Holger Rune at the 2025 Australian Open. The Italian appeared to be battling an illness and was visibly shaking during a break in play in the third set, raising concerns about his condition.

On Monday, Sinner, who has been in scintillating form, came up against a fired-up Rune. The World No. 1 dominated the opening set, securing it 6-3 with a display of precision and power.

However, the momentum shifted in the second set as Rune, ranked World No. 13, capitalized on Sinner’s apparent struggles. The Dane showcased exceptional tennis to turn the tide, taking the second set 6-3. Despite showing signs of discomfort, the defending champion notably refrained from requesting any on-court treatment.

In the third set, Sinner continued to deliver exceptional shots, but concerning signs regarding his condition began to surface. At 2-1 up, he was spotted visibly distressed on his bench with a towel over his face and a trembling right hand.

Later, at 2-2, he was seen having a conversation with his team clearly struggling in the match.

At 3-2 up, he finally called for a medical timeout and left the court for treatment.

The situation appeared more indicative of illness than injury, possibly heat-related. Sinner consulted with a doctor, who checked his pulse. Despite not looking fully recovered, the reigning champion returned to the court determined to push through.

Rune resumed serving with Sinner leading 3-2 in the third set, but the Italian broke later to lead 5-3. The 21-year-old then called for the doctor, though the reason was unclear. Shortly after, Sinner clinched the set 6-3.

More drama ensued at the Rod Laver Arena during Jannik Sinner vs. Holger Rune when officials had to step in to fix the net while Rune was up 1-0 in the fourth set. Both players returned to their locker rooms during the delay.

After the net issue delay, Jannik Sinner found his rhythm, breaking Holger Rune twice in the fourth set to win it 6-2 and seal the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. This victory marks a significant step in Sinner's title defense, as he extends his remarkable streak to 18 consecutive hardcourt Grand Slam wins.

The World No. 1 will now face the winner of the quarterfinal between eighth-seed Alex de Minaur and rising star Alex Michelsen. Sinner holds an impressive 9-0 lead against De Minaur, having only lost one set to the Aussie, and is undefeated against Michelsen, having won both their encounters last year.
