Alexander Zverev led a fantastic campaign at the 2025 Australian Open, finishing as runner-up after a loss to reigning World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final. In his speech after the match, the German made his feelings known about his defeat, leading to an emotional reaction from his girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla.
Zverev began his campaign in Melbourne with a commanding win over Lucas Pouille, before going on to beat Jacob Fearnley, Igo Humbert, and Tommy Paul. The semifinal saw him emerge victorious against Novak Djokovic, after the Serb pulled out from the match due to injury. In the finals, Zverev fell short against Sinner with a score of 3-6, 6-7(4), 3-6.
After the match, the German rued his defeat in the final, saying in his runner up speech:
“I really did think I have a chance but here I am, you know but I don't know if I'll ever be able to lift the trophy but I'll keep coming back. I'll keep trying and I'll see you guys all next year, thank you.”

Alexander Zverev thanks his team after his runner-up finish at the Australian Open 2025
For Alexander Zverev, his second place finish at the Australian Open means that a Grand Slam title eludes the German yet again.
In his runner-up speech, the tennis star extended his thanks to his team, recounting his comeback form the ankle injury he suffered in 2022:
“I want to thank my team. I mean we're trying to do all the right work, I'm just not good enough, it's as simple as that. But I really appreciate what everybody has done over the last few years, back from my ankle injury to world number two to playing grand slam finals again. So I really appreciate everything that they have done and I wouldn't be here without them.”
Zverev also extended his congratulations to winner Jannik Sinner in his speech, saying:
“Congratulations to Janik. You more than deserve it. You're the best player in the world by far. I was hoping that I could be more competitive today, but you're just too good. It's as simple as that. So, congratulations to you. You really deserve it. Congrats to your team as well. You've done all the right things. You've done all the work, there's nobody that deserves this trophy more.”
With his campaign at the 2025 Australian Open, Alexander Zverev has now made it to three Grand Slam finals, including the 2020 US Open and the 2024 French Open.
