Andre Agassi presented Jannik Sinner with the US Open trophy after the Italian dispatched home favorite Taylor Fritz in straight sets to win his second Grand Slam of the year. The top seed won 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 16 minutes.
Sinner came to Flushing Meadows after a successful North American hard-court swing, reaching the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open and winning the Cincinnati Masters.
Though there were some initial hiccups against Mackenzie McDonald in the opening round, the Italian managed to overcome them and dispatched Alex Michelsen and Christopher O'Connell in the subsequent rounds. He then ousted home favorite Tommy Paul, fifth seed Daniil Medvedev, and 25th seed Jack Draper to reach the final where he decimated Fritz to win the title.
This was the 23-year-old's second Grand Slam title of the season and his career following his win against Daniil Medvedev from two sets down to clinch the Australian Open.
The coveted US Open trophy was presented to the World No. 1 by a two-time champion at Flushing Meadows, Andre Agassi. The American won the US Open in 1994 and 1999. Agassi shook Sinner's hand and embraced him before handing the trophy to him, which the Italian raised to celebrate.
Jannik Sinner has won the Australian Open, ABN AMRO Open, Miami Masters, Terra Wortmann Open, Cincinnati Masters, and now the US Open in 2024 to cement his position as the World No. 1 with 11,180 ranking points. The Italian will be 4,105 points ahead of Alexander Zverev, the World No. 2, in the updated ATP rankings.
He has a staggering 55-5 win/loss record in 2024.
"She is really not feeling well health-wise" - Emotional Jannik Sinner dedicates his US Open triumph to his aunt
During his trophy presentation, an emotional Jannik Sinner said that he understood the importance of separating his personal and professional life. He dedicated his triumph at Flushing Meadows to his ailing aunt, who hasn't been keeping well.
"I love tennis. I practice a lot for this kind of stage, but I also realize that off the court, there is a life. I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt because she is really not feeling well health-wise. I don't know how much longer I still have her in my life," the World No. 1 said.
Sinner said that he was happy to be able to share some positive moments with her and called her an important part of his life. He wished the best health for every person but knew that it isn't possible.
"It's so nice that I can share positive moments still with her. She was a very important person for my life and she still is. If there would be a biggest wish, I would wish everyone the best health but unfortunately, it's not possible," he added.
Jannik Sinner also addressed how his drug controversy saga had him struggling and said it was a tough period.
