Murray is a known feminist and an ally of women's tennis. He hired a female coach Amelie Mauresmo and advocated for equal pay in tennis. He also fought against casual sexism and called for more women's matches at Wimbledon Centre Court.

An old video, where the former World No. 1 corrected a reporter who overlooked the achievements of American female tennis players has been doing the rounds on social media. The incident happened at a press conference after the quarterfinal encounter between Murray and Sam Querrey at Wimbledon 2017.

The journalist said:

"Sam is the first U.S. player to reach a Major semifinal since 2009....."

Murray interrupted:

"Male player."

Murray kept a poker face while the journalist laughed off in embarrassment and said:

"Yes first male player, that's for sure."

The journalist seemingly forgot that tennis legend Serena Williams has been in multiple semifinals and finals from 2009 to 2017 while Venus Williams has also reached at least the semifinal stage four times during the given time period.

Madison Keys reached the semifinals at the 2015 Australian Open while Sloane Stephens reached the semifinals at the 2013 Australian Open.

Murray also stood for Serena and Venus Williams when a presenter labeled him as the first player to win two gold medals in tennis. The Brit corrected him by telling him that he was the first one to defend the singles titles as the Williams sisters had won four each.
