Carlos Alcaraz went around the net to hit a sublime Roger Federer-esque winner during his first-round win at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Spaniard ousted Lebanon's Hady Habib 6-3, 6-1 in just an hour and 10 minutes to kick off his quest for a medal.
Alcaraz, seeded second, is making his debut at the prestigious event this year. The Spaniard is entering the Olympics riding high in form after triumphing at back-to-back Grand Slams and conquering the Channel Slam - the French Open and Wimbledon. Also, the Olympics are being at Roland Garros this year meaning the surface will be clay, the surface on which the 21-year-old won his third major.
The World No. 3 is headlining the bottom half of the draw alongside the likes of Alex de Minaur, Casper Ruud and Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz kicked off his campaign with a routine win against Lebanon's Hady Habib.
However, during the second set at 1-5 30-30 on Habib's serve, a lob by Carlos Alcaraz was returned by the Lebanese through a backhand smash. The Spaniard rushed ahead in order to reach the ball and hit a sublime slice from around the net to stun the Paris crowd and get a break point.
This winner was reminiscent of the winner the Spaniard hit during the 2023 Wimbledon Championships against Matteo Berrettini in the fourth round. Wimbledon's social media compared the winner hit by Alcaraz to that of Roger Federer's running backhand winner from a similar position in 2009.
Carlos Alcaraz will play the winner of Tallon Griekspoor and Cameron Norrie in the second round, to kick off the doubles campaign alongside Rafael Nadal
After his sublime first-round win, Carlos Alcaraz will play the winner of the opening-round match between Great Britain's Cameron Norrie and Netherlands's Tallon Griekspoor. This will be the first match between the two men.
Alcaraz boasts a head-to-head lead against both men. He is 4-2 up against the Brit and has a 2-1 lead on clay. However, it is interesting to note that Norrie won their most recent meeting on clay at the 2023 Rio Open final coming from a set down.
On the other hand, the Spaniard has a 2-0 lead against the Dutch, but the duo has yet to face each other on clay. They met each other in the qualifying of the Estoril Open in 2021 where Alcaraz prevailed in straight sets.
Carlos Alcaraz will also play the men's doubles where he will team up with his idol Rafael Nadal. The duo will play sixth seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the opening round.
