Iga Swiatek shared a bizarre handshake with Danielle Collins ahead of the 2025 United Cup final between Team Poland and Team USA. The two women were involved in a controversial matchup at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

While Collins was in the form of her life in 2024, Swiatek's prowess on clay made her one of the favorites for the gold at the Olympics. Interestingly, the fiery matchup was marred with controversial moments like the American hitting a backhand on the Pole's chest, Collins retiring mid-match due to an abdominal injury, and her confrontation with Swiatek during the ceremonious handshake.

Collins felt that Swiatek was being 'insincere' about her injury and decided to call the Pole out on it, leaving her baffled.

Here's a look at their handshake:

However, the two women have yet again shared a seemingly strange handshake ahead of Team USA and Team Poland's 2025 United Cup Final, where Swiatek kicked things off against Coco Gauff. The Pole later reflected on the controversy stating she couldn't comprehend what sparked Collin's comments.

Interestingly, Collins' compatriot Emma Navarro was also involved in a similar controversy due to a confrontation with Zheng Qinwen. She felt like the Chinese didn't treat her with respect.

"I could have taken a different approach" - Danielle Collins looks back on the controversial incident with Iga Swiatek

During an interview with The Athletic in November last year, Danielle Collins admitted that she could have taken a different approach while addressing her controversy with Iga Swiatek.

"I think what happened on the court is very much just like sometimes people have friction at work," Collins said. "For most people, it's not on the news. I'm trying to be the best person that I can be, but that's not to say that I don't fall short of that. I could have taken a different approach and done some things differently. But we had a moment there on court."

When asked if Collins had been in touch with the Pole since their heated interaction, she said that Swiatek was 'guarded' by her people. The American also felt that whenever there was some friction between women, the situation was blown out of proportion.

"She's not someone that I really get to see a lot at the tennis and she's very guarded with her group. We all make mistakes and fall short. And I'm just trying to put that behind me. I think when guys kind of get into a little tiff or a little bit of friction, I think that it's kind of expected. With women, it becomes this way bigger issue than it really needs to be. There's a lot of extrapolation," Collins added.

Iga Swiatek and Coco Guaff are currently facing each other in the opening match of the United Cup final with Gauff winning the opening set.
