Gael Monfils advanced to R16 of the Australian Open 2025 for the first time since 2022. With this, he also became the second oldest - only after Roger Federer to move to the fourth round of the AO.
Fans reacted positively and lauded the Frenchman after he pulled off this stunning achievement against the American. One such fan took to X to say:
Being his usual humorous self, Monfils engaged in a light-hearted banter at the post-match interview. When the interviewer asked about his plans to take an ice bath after such a heated encounter with Taylor Fritz, he jokingly said:
"To be honest my physio wants me to be in there atleast 30 minutes, but I’ll try 2 minutes maximum. I try to sneak in and out a bit. Ice bath is not so much for me”
Gael Monfils being a supportive husband to Elina Svitolina
The tennis power couple Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina have been great cheerleaders of one another and have shown up for each other whenever either of them is playing. The Frenchman too has been spotted on both occasions during AO 25 at the courtside when his wife Elina, the Ukrainian tennis icon, was at play.
After Monfils' match today at the Margaret Court Arena, Elina is set to face Jasmine Paolini in the third round of the tournament, on the same court. At the post-match interview, Monfils is hopeful of his wife's win and addressed this by saying:
"I think I warmed the court up for her"
The duo have had a wonderful time on the court up until now in Melbourne. They have also shared their joy at having their daughter Skai alongside them during the tournament. They are delighted to be able to share some of their precious memories with her.
Gael Monfils will be seen again on the court tomorrow, January 19, 2025, for his fourth round of the Australian Open.
