Elina Svitolina hilariously failed in her attempts to pronounce French words during a recent interaction leaving her husband Gael Monfils in splits. The fun challenge tasked the Ukrainian with pronouncing tough French words.
The couple began dating after Monfils worked up the courage to message Svitolina on Instagram after the Ukrainian posted a photo and they fell for each other since.
"I went to celebrate with my friends in Paris. I posted a photo on Instagram and Gael texted me. We met each other and we could not split anymore. It was an amazing coincidence that both of us were in Paris in the same time because I live in London now and Gael, despite he is from Paris, lives in Geneva," Svitolina said.
Monfils and Svitolina got engaged in April 2021 and got married on July 16 that year. They also welcomed their first, a daughter, Skai on October 15, 2022.
They also share an Instagram account together called g.e.m.s.life which stands for (G)ael.(E)lina.(M).(S) in which they recently shared a hilarious clip of Elina Svitolina failing in trying to pronounce the French words 'anticonstitutionnellement', 'cueillir', and 'reblochon' leaving Monfils in splits.
Though she came close to pronouncing the word 'anticonstitutionnellement', she failed miserably at pronouncing 'cueillir'. Her initial attempt at 'reblochon' was also poor but her later pronunciations came very close according to Monfils.
Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina are both currently active on tour and competed at the recently-concluded French Open. Monfils exited in the second round following a straight-set defeat to Lorenzo Mussetti. Elina Rybakina, on the other hand, was ousted by fourth seed Elena Rybakina in straight sets in the fourth round.
"My wife looks super-professional in a way and I don't look professional, but that's not really the case" - Gael Monfils on comparisons with Elina Svitolina
Back in May this year, Gael Monfils opened up about the comparisons people made between him and his wife Elina Svitolina. He talked about how Svitolina looked professional and compared to her, he didn't. The 37-year-old is famous for his highlight-reel tennis and is considered one of the best entertainers in the sport.
The Frenchman explained that it was not the case and that he had a work ethic. He said how he found these comments funny rather than hurtful.
"Some people try to compare my wife and I. My wife looks super-professional in a way and me I don’t look professional in a way. But that’s not really the case because I have my work ethic. I’m working. It’s funny but in the end, it’s not hurting me," Monfils said (via the Guardian).
Gael Monfils is next scheduled to compete at the Mallorca Championships while Elina Svitolina's next tournament will be the Bad Homburg Open.
