Following her win in the first round of the 2024 French Open, Emma Navarro attempted to celebrate with a high-five, only to be comically rejected by a little girl. The American defeated qualifier Zeynep Sonmez in the opening round of the Claycourt Slam.
Navarro kicked off her 2024 season with a title win at the Hobart International, followed by reaching the final at the Trophée Clarins, a WTA 125 tournament. She also made it to the semifinals at the San Diego Open and reached the final eight at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the WTA 125 Catalonia Open in Lleida, Spain.
Currently seeded 22nd at the French Open, Navarro began her campaign with a dominant victory over Turkish qualifier Zeynep Sonmez, winning 6-2, 6-0 in the first round.
The Turk had earned her spot in the main draw by defeating Dejana Radanovic, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and Jana Fett in the final qualifying round. With her win over Fett, Sonmez became the first Turkish woman to compete in a Grand Slam main draw since Ipek Soylu at the 2017 US Open, and only the third in total after Cagla Buyukakcay.
Following her victory over Zeynep Sonmez, Emma Navarro made her way to the stands where she interacted with young fans, giving them high-fives. Despite most of the children eagerly reciprocating, one little girl left the World No. 24 hanging as she got shy.
