Matteo Berrettini and Hugo Gaston played an intense final at the 2024 Generali Open in Kitzbühel on July 27. Berrettini emerged victorious against Gaston, who could not hold back his tears after suffering a crushing loss.
Gaston reached his first ATP Tour final in three years at the Generali Open after a tough campaign in which he bettered the likes of seventh seed Roberto Carballes Baena and top seed Sebastian Baez. In the title contest, the Frenchman faced a red-hot Matteo Berrettini, who had not dropped a set in the tournament.
Both players made a solid start to the contest, but it was Berrettini who took advantage of the only breakpoint opportunity on Gaston's serve to take the first set. The Italian was unstoppable in the second set as he broke the Frenchman twice to race to 5-2. Gaston showed some resilience to get one of the breaks back in the next game, but he could not contain Berrettini for long.
The former Wimbledon finalist secured a third break of the Frenchman's serve and won the match, 7-5, 6-3, in an hour and 21 minutes. After the enthralling contest, Hugo Gaston grew emotional after coming up short in his conquest for a maiden ATP Tour title.
The 23-year-old was seen in tears while sitting in his chair before the presentation ceremony, with his coach, Younes El Aynaoui, coming down from the stands to console him and give him a few words of encouragement.

Matteo Berrettini wins 3rd title on 2024 ATP Tour at Kitzbühel
Matteo Berrettini continued his good form on the 2024 ATP Tour at the Generali Open, where he picked up his 10th tour-level title. After persistent injury struggles in the last two years, the Italian finally managed to play consistent tennis in 2024 and has found his best form. The former World No. 6 picked up his first title in two years at the 2024 Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, Morocco.
He then finished runners-up at the Stuttgart Open to Jack Draper before once again returning to the winner's circle at the Swiss Open Gstaad. Berrettini did not drop a set while bettering the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Stefanos Tsistipas, and Quentin Halys en route to the ATP 250 title.
The 28-year-old backed up his triumph in Gstaad with a win at the Generali Open. The Italian did not drop a set in Kitzbühel either and extended his winning streak to 14 matches. With his title in Austria, Matteo Berrettini became the third player after Jannik Sinner (4) and Carlos Alcaraz (3) to win three tournaments in 2024.
