Iga Swiatek could not contain her emotions after escaping defeat at the hands of Naomi Osaka at the 2024 French Open on Wednesday (May 29). In a recently emerged clip, the Pole was seen crying uncontrollably as she kept herself in contention for the title.
Swiatek, who trailed fellow four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka for the most part in their second-round match at the French Open, pulled a rabbit out of the hat in the final moments of the contest to come out on top.
The Pole also miraculously fended off one match point in the process, when she trailed 3-5 in the final set. She crossed the finish line after three hours of grueling play, with a 7-6 (1), 1-6, 7-5 scoreline, despite Naomi Osaka winning five more points than her (109-114).
Iga Swiatek ditched her usual energetic celebration for a muted one, with an unmistakable sense of relief visible on her face. However, in a recently emerged video, the two-time French Open defending champion could be seen bawling her eyes out during her post-match recovery.

Iga Swiatek also addressed her remarkable escape in her post-match press conference.
"Well, it’s hard to have any logical thoughts because, for sure, it was really intense and on a really high level. I was in huge trouble in the third set, but I somehow managed to win this match, which is kind of abstract. But I’m glad I didn’t give up," she said.
The World No. 1, though, confessed that she had her doubts about getting over the hump.
"I honestly didn’t believe that I could win because that would be pretty naive. But that didn’t change the fact that I just tried to work hard to play better," she noted.
About her overall performance against Naomi Osaka before the comeback, Swiatek said:
"I felt like I was not completely in the zone."
"And when I was under the biggest pressure, I was actually able to switch that, and maybe that made the difference," she added. "But honestly, when it's so tight, it's just, I don’t know, it’s not like I have influence over everything."
Naomi Osaka, too, admitted to crying after tense French Open clash with Iga Swiatek
Just like Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, too, was overwhelmed by the contest. While the former World No. 1 admitted to crying after the crushing defeat, she maintained an optimistic approach regardless.
"Honestly, it’s not the worst. Like, I felt worse, for sure. I cried when I got off the court," she admitted.
"But then for me, I kind of realized that I was watching Iga win this tournament last year and I was pregnant. And it was just my dream to be able to play here. So when I think of it like that, I think I’m doing pretty well," the new mother added.
The second-round match at the 2024 French Open marked Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka’s third meeting on the tour. With the rivals splitting their wins in the first two matches, Iga Swiatek now has the lead in their head-to-head (2-1).
The Pole, who is chasing her fifth Grand Slam and fourth French Open title, faces either Marie Bouzkova or Jana Fett in the third round on Friday.
