Iga Swiatek got booed during her on-court interview at the Rod Laver Arena. The second seed blew away Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova 6-0, 6-2 in the second-round match to advance to the Round of 32 of the Melbourne Major.
However, there was a brief moment of drama during the Pole's on-court interview with Jelena Dokic. Knowing that Swiatek was a coffee lover, Dokic asked her about her favorite coffee order. Swiatek replied that she had found better coffee in Sydney than in Melbourne. Hearing this answer, there were some loud boos in the stadium.
"Oh well, I gotta say in Sydney, I found better coffee shops?" said Swiatek during her on-court interview via X (formerly Twitter).
On hearing this the crowd immediately started to boo her. The Pole tactfully pacified the crowd, saying she had not done enough research to give her verdict regarding the coffee found in Australia. However, she clarified that Australian coffee was up to her liking.
"But no,no,no, guys, the thing is that also it's not easy for me to asleep, so during a Grand Slam I'm kinda, you know, my coffee level needs to be a bit lower, I'm only drinking it before the match. So I didn't do the right research, so sorry for my answer. But no, I mean overall I think, in Australia it's hard to get wrong coffee, you know, like every coffee shop keeps like a really great quality." added Swiatek via X (Formerly Twitter).
The Pole also revealed that "flat white on oat milk" was her favorite coffee order.
With her win, Swiatek set up a blockbuster clash with another Major champion, Emma Raducanu in the next round.
"It's our choice if we want to use it or not"- Iga Swiatek gives her take on on-court coaching innovation at the Australian Open
The 2025 Australian Open has been the trailblazer in certain aspects, as even organizers made provisions so that the coaches of the players can be on the courtside. This move is meant to increase the access of the players to their teams during the match and also add value to spectator viewership.
Iga Swiatek has expressed her approval for this change. The Pole claimed that it was up to the player to use this new facility. However, personally for her, she found it advantageous as she could communicate with her coaches during the match.
"Now actually it makes more sense, because both if you play on a smaller court you can use it if you play on the stadium, as well. I think now it finally makes sense. Yeah, I like it. It’s our choice if we want to use it or not. If you have a good communication with your coach, I think it might work.” said Swiatek at the post-match press conference at the Australian Open (via thetennisgazette.com)
After thrashing Rebecca Sramkova, Iga Swiatek will next take on Emma Raducanu in the third round of the Australian Open. It will be the fourth meeting between the two, with the Pole having won each of their three prior encounters.
