Iga Swiatek shed tears of happiness as she clinched the bronze medal for her nation Poland at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Swiatek ousted Anna Schmiedlova in straight sets to get to the podium at the prestigious event.
Swiatek, the top seed, was widely considered a favorite to win the gold at the Olympics as the event was being held at Roland Garros, where the World No. 1 has won three consecutive French Opens.
The 23-year-old continued her scintillating form at Roland Garros with a win against Romania's Irina Begu following which she defeated home favorite Diane Parry comfortably and China's Wang Xiyu. All of these wins came in straight sets. The Pole then faced American Danielle Collins but the topsy-turvy match came to an unfortunate end when Collins had to retire due to an abdominal injury.
Swiatek then faced Zheng Qinwen, who is having the best season of her career this year, in the semifinals. Qinwen stunned the Pole 6-2, 7-5 to shatter the latter's dream of winning gold in Paris thus ending her 25-match win streak at Roland Garros. She also broke down in tears during an interview after her heartbreaking defeat.
However, Iga Swiatek came up with a stunning performance during her third-place match against Anna Schmiedlova. She decimated the Slovak 6-2, 6-1 in just 59 minutes on August 2 (Friday) to win the bronze medal for Poland.
After the match, Swiatek, who was overwhelmed with joy, shed tears of happiness as she soaked in the moment. Here's the clip:

With her bronze medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Iga Swiatek has become the first Polish tennis player to have a place on the Olympic podium. She also became the first person in her family to win a medal for Poland at the prestigious event.
Swiatek's father, Tomasz Swiatek, who was a rower, competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. He participated in the quadruple sculls alongside Sławomir Cieślakowski, Andrzej Krzepiński, and Mirosław Mruk. They placed seventh, failing to capture a medal.
Iga Swiatek will now turn her focus towards the North American hardcourt swing. She is slated to take part in the National Bank Open in Canada, a title she has yet to capture. The tournament is set to begin on August 4.
