Iga Swiatek's fourth-round opponent at the 2025 Australian Open, Eva Lys experienced a rare moment of unexpected joy despite losing the match. By reaching the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament, Lys made history, becoming the first lucky loser to do so in the Open Era.
During her match against Iga Swiatek in the fourth round on Monday, Eva Lys was defeated 6-0, 6-1 in less than an hour. However, what stood out was the 23-year-old's moment of celebration which she had after she held her serve for the first time against Swiatek in the second set. Eva Lys began her campaign at the Melbourne Major by defeating Hanne Vandewinkel and Arina Rodionova in the first two qualifying rounds before losing to Destanee Aiava in the third qualifying round.
However, a withdrawal from Anna Kalinskaya allowed Lys to enter the main draw of the tournament.
In the main draw, Lys defeated qualifier Kimberly Birrell 6-2, 6-2, and Varvara Gracheva 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the first two rounds. She then triumphed over Jaqueline Cristian to set up a clash against Swiatek.
Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek had a strong start to the 2025 Australian Open. The Pole defeated Katerina Siniakova and Rebecca Sramkova in the initial rounds. She then secured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Emma Raducanu. With her recent fourth-round win over Lys, Swiatek will take on Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, January 22.

Iga Swiatek will take on eighth seed Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Australian Open. Swiatek's best performance at the Grand Slam tournament was reaching the semifinals in 2022, where she was defeated by eventual runner-up Danielle Collins. On the other hand, Navarro's best result at the tournament has come this year, following her win over Daria Kasatkina.
Navarro kicked off her campaign at the 2025 Melbourne Major by defeating compatriot Peyton Stearns in the first round and then secured a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Wang Xiyu in the second.
The World No. 8 went on to overcome ninth seed Ons Jabeur 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and ninth seed Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 in the following rounds to secure her spot in her maiden Australian Open quarterfinal.
Iga Swiatek and Emma Navarro have only faced each other once on the WTA Tour, with the Pole leading their head-to-head 1-0. The winner of the quarterfinal match between Swiatek and Navarro will advance to face either 19th seed Madison Keys or 28th seed Elina Svitolina in the semifinals.
