Iga Swiatek produced a moment of sheer brilliance during Poland's pulsating mixed doubles match against Norway's Casper Ruud and Ulrikke Eikeri in the group phase of the ongoing 2025 United Cup. Swiatek and her mixed doubles partner Jan Zielinski came out on top in the thrilling encounter to seal a memorable comeback win for Poland in the topsy-turvy tie.
The moment came in the match tiebreak. With Norway leading the tiebreak 4-3 at the time, Ruud served to Zielinski. After a brief rally between the two, Ruud hit a forehand in Swiatek's direction. The former WTA World No. 1 in singles went toe-to-toe with the former ATP World No. 2, and the epic baseline rally ended with Swiatek hitting a crosscourt forehand winner, completely catching Eikeri out.

Earlier in the tie, Ruud and Swiatek had won their respective singles rubbers to start the mixed doubles match with the score at 1-1. Thanks to Swiatek and Zielinski's efforts, Poland now finds itself in second position in Group B, behind Czechia.
Swiatek also produced a rather hilarious moment on the court, as she got irked by the crowd in Sydney after she misunderstood their chants.
Iga Swiatek annoyed by United Cup crowd after misinterpreting Casper Ruud chants; Pole issues apology after mixed doubles win
During the mixed doubles match, a large section of the Sydney crowd was cheering for Casper Ruud, chanting "Ruud" repeatedly. However, Iga Swiatek perceived it as the crowd booing the Norwegian contingent. The Pole was rather irritated by this, but during the post-match, on-court interview, she realized what had happened and issued an apology to the crowd.
Swiatek also seemingly revisited the 2024 Wimbledon Championships fourth-round match featuring Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune. After winning the match, Djokovic had lambasted the crowd for allegedly booing him, but in reality, many were actually cheering for Rune and not in any way booing the Serb.
"OK if you were saying (Casper) Ruud, then I’m sorry. Well, I saw on internet last year that someone else was confused, I think with (Holger) Rune? They (the crowd) were saying ‘Rune’ ...OK, then it’s my fault," Swiatek said.
Poland's last group phase tie will be up against Group B leaders Czechia, in which Swiatek is set to face the talented Karolina Muchova in singles. Meanwhile, Hubert Hurkacz will lock horns against ATP rival Tomas Machac. The mixed doubles teams are yet to be confirmed.
