Jannik Sinner arrived in Turin for the year-end ATP Finals scheduled to begin from 10-17 November. The Italian was given a hero's welcome as he interacted with fans in his home country.
The reigning Australian Open and US Open champion holds the tour-highest seven titles in the 2024 season and will be the year-end World No. 1 regardless of the outcome of the ATP Finals.
The 23-year-old was the first player to arrive in Turin for the prestigious event. He was greeted by a crowd outside a hotel with a few singing and dedicating the lines from the famous soccer song Ole Ole We are the Champions to him.
Sinner clasped his hands and gave a slight bow to the crowd. He also smiled and waved at them before making his way into the hotel lobby.
Five of the eight spots at the ATP Finals constitute Jannik Sinner Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz while three spots still remain open.
Jannik Sinner to cap his stellar season as year-end No. 1
Jannik Sinner triumphed over Novak Djokovic in the final of the Shanghai Masters in October. In doing so, he also sealed his position as the year-end No. 1.
Sinner has had a breakthrough season beginning with his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2024 Australian Open. He later won the Rotterdam Open, Miami Open, Halle Open and the Cincinnati Open. The World No. 1 also lifted his second Grand Slam trophy at the US Open. He is the first Italian player to win the Australian Open and become the year-end No. 1.
In an interview ahead of the 2024 Paris Masters, Sinner was asked how he felt about becoming the year-end No. 1, to which he replied:
"Yeah. It's one thing you arrive as World No. 1, second thing is then to finish as No. 1 and when I arrived to No. 1, it was one of my goals because you celebrate this in a different way. It's something nice, it means that you played the whole year with a very high level and finishing this milestone means so much to me," he said.
"It was one of my dreams and now it becomes a reality but in my mind I know some big tournaments are still coming up, the season is not finished yet and hopefully i can show some good tennis but celebrating this and in Italy also is something very nice," he added.
Sinner later withdrew from the Paris Masters as he was recovering from a virus. He will be seen on-court in Turin at the ATP Finals.
